Who Would You Actually Want as the Next Gm

Not that I want it...but I heard rumors that if Toronto bombs in the playoffs again, Shanahan is out. And the rumor is, he would come to the isles to be in the front office for 1 year with Lou then take over (not as GM). And if that happens, strong ties to Marner coming to the isles.

Lou as Governor
Shanahan as Pres of Hockey Operations
Milbury as GM
Chris Lam as Asst GM
Snow as GM at BP

The Dream Team.

I am still of the opinion that it would be beneficial to bring someone in who has actually done the job before. I would be fine bringing in a first time guy if he was a former NHLer who has been in an organization working.

Yes I agree, but I would still offer Thomas Hickey an assistant GM position so he can learn the ropes in the front office.

I agree. Need professional hockey people. Too bad Jim Nill isn’t available. I love that guy.

Don’t know how he’ll be as a GM but so many people around the league respect and think Tampas assistant GM Stacey Roest is a legit GM candidate.

We’re at a pivotal point. Whoever replaces Lou needs to be good.

Obviously we want good but good is fleeting too. Yzerman was good until he wasn't and Sweeney was seen as rock solid and now everyone in Boston wants his head. And then of course there is the Lou of four years ago that everyone here (present company excepted) wanted to build a statue of.

I don't know any more than anyone else here and what I know comes from public sources whose reliability is anyone's guess but my preference is someone younger (obviously), more analytically driven and who has worked with the best in biz; Brisebois, Zito, McCrimmon etc. In addition to that, I want someone who is ballsy, calculating, unsentimental and willing to push the limits of what is legal to do.

I'm not up there or maybe I've just missed it but has Hickey even expressed an interest in such a role? That is not me saying it is a good or bad idea btw.
I haven’t heard anything one way or the other. I hope Lou makes him an offer.

But why? What is it about Hickey that makes everyone think he is a good candidate? I mean, he's great on tv, a rising star in the industry for sure but so what? I'm just not getting where this is coming from.
Plenty of former players make good GMs. Hickey is bright, communicates his thoughts well, and I like the way he sees the game. To me it’s worth a shot to get him front office experience with an eye towards becoming a GM in the future.

The key word being plenty. I'm sure there are a lot of former players who fit your description of Hickey, particularly as it relates to knowledge of the game and vision, but aside from his being a former Islander I don't see anything in particular that separates him. And if it is the fact that he is a former Islander that isn't any reason to prefer him over other candidates. Not to mention, he has little playoff experience and certainly no Cup pedigree in his knowledge base.

Again, I'm not saying it is necessarily a bad idea have him learn the ropes, but IMO he is a long, long way from being ready for that job.

What is it that you’re looking for?

I'm not sure I understand the question. As it relates to Hickey? I'm not looking for anything. I just saw various posts mentioning his name and wondered if I had missed something like him expressing an interest in the job or something but you said that isn't the case and so, as I said before, I just don't get where all of this is coming from. He is polished and knowledgeable on tv and very good at his current job but I don't see how any of that necessarily translates. Yeah, he knows hockey but what kind of a deal maker would he be? Would he be comfortable peddling in flesh which is essentially the job? Does he have the stomach for it? There is a lot more to it than just knowledge of the game.
