Speculation: Who would you actually want as the next GM?

I was and still am to some degree in the 'no rookie' camp but as I look at some of the names being mentioned, I am more and more thinking someone who is an experienced ( 3-5 years ) assistant GM for one of the premiere franchises like TB, FL, VGK, etc. Someone who has learned from best but also has worked for franchises not afraid to cut ties and hurt feelings.

At first blush the retreads don't seem too appealing (except maybe McPhee, but at 67 is he even interested?). But maybe I could be sold on one of them (okay, maybe not Doug Wilson).

The successful Asst GM seems like a good route, except remember when Ron Hextall was that guy and then he was horrible without the "Asst" title?

I'll just have to trust the owners to get it right. If they can't, we're kind of screwed anyway, right?

I'm fairly confident the owners would do their due diligence (probably have been looking into possibilities). They seem pretty innovative. I'd love to see them find a Howie Roseman type - super smart and active - making moves every year to maximize asset values and somehow getting very talented guys in lower draft spots.

Some names I haven't seen mentioned (or maybe I missed): Ryan Martin (NYR Asst GM) seems to check a lot of boxes - just not ever an NHL GM. Jason Botterill - he's pretty young and educated and has been an NHL GM (currently Asst GM with SEA). Gregory Campbell (Asst GM of FLA).

BTW, while very unlikely I also wouldn't be totally shocked to see them hire someone from outside hockey.

Chuck Fletcher was last GM in 2022-23. He is 57. No championships.

Fletcher has a Harvard degree - like our owners. Just saying.

Have a sort of out of box guy with no experience, what about Boychuk? Lou made sure to keep him around and he sits next to Lou in the box almost every game I’ve been too. Is he being groomed for it? I remember reading article many years ago that indicated Lou’s son didn’t want a GM job as he enjoyed the scouting aspect.

honestly i feel like we are at a point where Our current GM is just not cutting it anymore. Even a rookie Gm would be better.

40 days brought Poti, Witt , Simon , and Okposo. Say what you want but the free agents were all very good on the Isles . Witt fell off because the game changed to the non physical , Simon ok the Hollweg smash but everyone lived . Poti was a win in the 1 year he stayed …LGI

I like the idea of Roy as the next G.M. I like everything I've seen so far from him, and he appears to be well liked, which would bode well when negotiating with other G.M.s.

Roy said that he doesn't want it, but i think he is saying that because he wants time to acclimatize to the NHL. I say in 2 years, he takes over for LL. Next year he spends time learning the G.M. game, and basically calls all the shots.

So, Roy for the 26/27 season, and Desrosiers as HC, is my guess.

I like Roy where he is for now...needs to focus as coach. As for who, no idea...above my pay grade but i gave no issue with a newcomer with a few years in a competent club and prefer a bit on the younger side.
