Who would you pick for LA at 3?

In general, I like the work ethic and development I am seeing with young German players.

Stutzle's shooting definitely is an area of weakness, but I think with some added strength he can improve on that.

What's also worth noting is the fact that in Germany's developmental league, Draisaitl scored 21 goals and 56 points in 35 games. Stutzle scored 23 goals and 55 points in 21 games. Draisaitl never played in the men's league however because he joined the Prince Albert Raiders.

I think once Stutzle is drafted, he's going to be playing somewhere in North America. His CHL rights are owned by the Seattle Thunderbirds, but if he's signed, he could be playing in the AHL, or NHL if he's physically ready.
It’s a power issue with his shot, is that correct? If his technique is otherwise fine (for his age) I’d be comfortable with assuming strength gains will make a meaningful difference. I’ve not really seen enough of him and highlight videos are often misleading.

Shot speed is a tricky thing. It's not always about athletic strength (e.g. Martin Frk and Matt Roy have the hardest shots on our team but are not the most physically imposing). Strength gains will definitely help a tad, but it has so much to do with leverage, hip positioning, release points, wrist flexion, etc. that "physically maturing" doesn't always help. I foresee hockey having a "swing mechanics" revolution at some point similar to baseball/golf where players have their swings broken down and built back up, but we're not there yet.

That being said, Stutzle creates opportunities to score through playmaking and deception. There are plenty of great NHL players who don't have stopping power in their shots but still score goals.

I did that and here is what I got. View media item 7696

I love playing with this draft tool, but I wish there was a way to import other player rankings from different sources into the tool, or even rank the players yourself prior to making the selections. The only thing you can really do is crank up the randomness factor to put a little spice into the rankings.

If the Kings end up at 3 and could trade down with New Jersey for 6 and 11, I do it in a heartbeat. That probably means Lafreniere, Byfield, and Drysdale are taken top three. Kings would end up with one of Stutzle, Raymond, or Rossi and then hopefully Quinn. What a huge win that would be for our offense. Let’s assume it’s Raymond and Quinn, for fun. Our prospect roster would be as follows:

Raymond - Turcotte - Quinn
Fagemo - Vilardi - Kaliyev
Thomas - Madden - Kupari
Grundstrom - Anderson-Dolan - Dudas

Sheesh.

Even if we got the 17th pick and got a guy like Holloway, I think it would be worth it.

Not sure NJ would view this as equal value. They might do #6 overall and their first pick in the 2nd round. New Jersey also owns Boston's 2nd round pick, so they might be willing to give up their 2nd round pick.

If I was Blake, I wouldn't do that deal (#6 plus NJ 2nd) though. If he could get #6 and #15 overall, he should consider it.
Who did New Jersey trade to Boston for their 2020 Second Round pick? Are you sure? Boston Bruins Future Draft Pick Status

I voted for Rossi...love the guy. May be too high at 3.

I thought about voting for him at #3; I love that many say he's the most NHL-ready player besides LaF on top of how complete of a center he's shown himself to be.

I decided against it purely due to the fact that I believe Stutzle's offensive upside is higher, and because Rossi's game reminds me of Turcotte.

I like how you think, man! I'm liking the Raymond more and more, but to tell you the truth I wonder about Quinn and how much his production was Rossi? Did Rossi make Quinn? I haven't seen a whole lot on Quinn, just saying

I believe that Byfield might drop in this draft, maybe down to fours or lower. He is a big guy who hasn't accomplished a ton yet but has all the tools to do so. He could go second like many think but he could also drop a few spots as well. For that matter so could Stutzle though for different reasons.

Here is the question, would you draft Byfield at 3rd if he was available? I wouldn't but that is just me.

I hope someone puts up one of these polls for who we will draft at 7th (and all the #'s in-between).

Pronman stated that Byfield is in a similar position now as to where LaFreniere was at a similar age (the latter is 9 months older than the former).

If Byfield drops and we're there to snag him, great, but I think it's pretty unlikely he drops lower than #4. I could see arguments to take Rossi over him due to perceived NHL-readiness and Drysdale due to him being a defenseman. As for Stutzle, I feel like they almost have similar concerns in terms of ability to translate/how their games round out even though they're very different prospects.

EDIT: BTW, this is the poll series you were saying you'd hope would be put up. Byfield was #2 by a landslide, and Stutzle is winning #3 by a large margin currently.

He's 17 years old, 6'4, over 210 lbs, and scored 32 goals and 82 points in 45 games. Who would you select over Byfield?

Thinking about what his potential is in 3 years I couldn’t pass on QB. He’s just got way too many assets to what he brings IMO.

Agree. It’s all technique and I agree with your interesting thoughts on swing mechanics.

Stutzle at 3 would be my pick. However, I could definitely see them taking Drysdale at 3 due to the fact that he's going to be a franchise defenseman for years to come. Kid is a beast.

If Drysdale is truly projecting as a #1 in all situations, I take him over Stutzle as well. I feel like the industry's mixed on whether Drysdale is a #1 defenseman, or if he's just going to be the best offensive defenseman on a team, if that makes sense?

From what I have seen of him on YouTube and in the WJC, he looks like he is going to be a dominant all-around defenseman someday. I would like to think in the mold of Doughty but probably not as physical. Button compared him to Zubov and if that projection pans out, the team taking him is going to be pretty happy. I think he looks to be a little better of a skater than Zubov was but then again, everything has evolved since then. THN giving him a ceiling of Heiskanen makes a little more sense, IMO.

If it was your choice @andys who would you have taken?
Earlier in another forum I said I would trade out once to New Jersey(3-4th for 6th) and then trade the 6th to Montreal for the 8th! Of course there would be some other parts(players, draft choices, future considerations) moving. Maybe I move Vilardi to Buffalo for their pick @ 7!That way I get a chance to take the Terror Twins,Raymond and Holtz...Det-Lafreniere,Ott-Byfield,NJ-Drysdale,Ott-Rossi, Anaheim-Stuetzle,Mont-Sanderson,LA-Raymond and Holtz. Then I would leave them in Sweden for 3 years to develop into the players they can be,rather than players like N Bergfors,M.Tedenby or J Josefson...3 first round picks that were destined to be bigger than they were...the reason...they were rushed...there is a lesson there...NJersey learned that...well...hope the Kings learn that patience is everything!

Drysdale at 3
Raymond at 4
Stützle at 5
Rossi at 6

I'd arguably swap Stützle and Rossi too. People love fancy players over substance. Can't go wrong with any of the above 4. Given my uncertainty between the forwards and what I've seen from Drysdale not easily yet I'd pretty soon likely opt for Drysdale at 3 outside of Byfield being available there.

Quinn and Rossi mostly played on different lines.

I like all of those, and maybe Heiskanen the most, since my comp for him is always Duncan Keith.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

I think that Byfield will go 2nd but I wouldn't be surprised to see him at 4ist either. There are a few elite/potentially generational talents in this draft. That doesn't mean that they are will become either of those things at the NHL level but as of today I think that each of these players have established themselves to be considered as such.
In no particular order,
Laffy
Askarov
Drysdale
all have talent that is a level above the rest of the draft. You could say that Rossi and Stutzle have those types of skills as well but I believe that these 3 players are at an entirely different level then the rest of their competition (to go 1st overall).

If teams acually drafted on best player available at the position that they are selecting from then these 3 players should at least be in the conversation to go in the first 3 spots. So if I were GM of the Kings and selecting 1st overall I would do what everyone else is said to be doing and go for Laffy without question. He is a truly elite level talent and will very likely be an excellent top 6 forward.
After him it gets a little bit more difficult to say which player should be selected but I would go for Drysdale based on need and talent, not that I believe that Askarov is less talented than Drysdale entirely but would rather us fill the need we have on D. At 3 I would select Askarov because along with his elite level of talent at his position he has an incredible work either (based on his coaching staff and the Russian media that is). That doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to take Rossi Stutzle or Byfield at 2 or later but that I am a truly BPA guy as much as I can possibly be.

I believe that there is a chance that other scouting staffs and GM's may see things the same way and act accordingly. They also may not. There isn't a right or wrong at this point in these players careers at this level of the draft that shouldn't be at least malleable when it comes to who is likely to be the best of the best. I see Byfield but right at the door of being one of those top 3 but not quite there yet. He plays a soft game and leaves you wanting to see him use his size more often then he ever does. To me he will likely develop beyond that issue but while it is there it leaves me thinking that he hasn't yet made it to that elite level. Lots of people disagree with my position on him and that is cool with me. I am often wrong, just not as often as I am right but even then I respect my fellow Kings fans enough be able to consider everyone else's opinion to be as valid as my own.

So how I think teams will likely draft?

Laffy
Byfield
Drysdale
Stutzle
Rossi
Raymond
Perfetti (though I could see him drop out of the top ten as well)
Quinnifer
Holtz
Sanderson
Askarov

Not how I would do it but that is what I think will happen (after pick #5 I think you could draw them from a hat so I am not married to the order). Meh.
