Proposal: Who would be YOUR hire as the new Head coach?

I would literally rather have one of @GoAwayPanarin or @Fitzy over guys like Sullivan at this point in their NHL shelf lives and considering how stale this team is/how much it doesn’t need an old boys club retread right now.

Like, I would literally rather hire Matthew McConnaghy to PLAY a coach, and do that while actually coaching us.

And therein lies the difference -- MSL had "prior coaching experience" whereas Messier made it known he wanted top spot without experience and turned down the chance to actually get said experience on the AHL level. Messier would be less successful than Gretzky.
I understand the argument against. This team however, is in dire need of a culture transformation. St.Louis by the way, was only a consultant with CBJ. The only other coaching experience he had was coaching his kids.

If I were to analyze Cooper he's never struck me as a hard ass.....more a cerebral coach. He identified early on his leadership group and he sticks with and implicitly trusts in them. For those thinking he would automatically or if ever change around our power play group if he were to become the Rangers coach he wouldn't without a goddamn good reason. Players are expected to fill roles.....even the more unappreciated ones. He's good at incorporating young players with time in Syracuse into his bottom 6 and bottom pairing roles and getting good results. The sum of the parts of those role players are usually a lot better than the parts on their own. Tampa is another team showing some signs of aging and really they have no replacements for guys like Vasilevskiy, Hedman, Kucherov or Point when they do age out--no real superstars on the horizon......so they're likely going to fall off eventually and when it happens some people are going to make out like they're doing with Sullivan now. Between Cooper and Sullivan though I'd easily take Cooper. He gets more out of his spare parts.

That's a tough one. Drury is obviously Sully's connection and he has to be on his last lifeline by now.
I mean lol that he says sullivan won't be available and then here we are a week later

I do think Dolan backing Drury gives a prospective coach some more security but yeah anyone knows they're getting into a sticky situation

Latest odds

New York Rangers Next Head Coach

Mike Sullivan 3/2

Jay Leach 5/2

David Carle 7/2

Rick Tocchet 4/1

Michael Peca 5/1

Joel Quenneville 15/2

Jay Woodcroft 12/1

John Tortorella 18/1

Bednar might be available when Avs lose, don’t think much of him honest based how he’s coached since that Cup win. But he will be an option for Drury.

If the Bolts lose tomorrow, I wonder if Jon Cooper will be a possibility. I prefer Cooper over Sullivan. Rangers should wait and maybe better coaches become available

Paul Maurice is my pipe dream hire for NYR. I'm convinced he's the best coach in the sport. Understands playoff and winning hockey to a tee. No easy ice defensively. Every play is hard gapped and highly-contested. Offensive players have freedom to create and they forecheck with force. Team full of nail guns with skill who will beat you up and take your lunch money. His system fits their personnel perfectly. Always a treat to listen to him speak as well. He's decisively out-coached Jon Cooper since arriving in Florida IMO.

Brooks suggests DeBoer would be a candidate if Dallas fires him. He's had success everywhere he's gone with a positive track record with young players and he's been knocking on the door for that elusive Cup (much like Maurice was). Would easily prefer him over Sullivan.

The thing about Cooper is that he's not exactly a hard ass, but he also doesn't have a lot of tolerance for BS. Both Kucherov and Point have been benched at times, I think both at once some point earlier this year? He knows when a guy is just having an off night or if there's a problem that needs to be addressed, and then he addresses it. It's not so much about being a hard ass as it is having a strong culture of accountability that EVERY player needs to be part of.

He could adjust our PP... so that we allow more shorties.

The good thing is everyone on the NYR HF Board agrees on who the new coach should be so Drury has an easy choice. :D
