Proposal: Who would be YOUR hire as the new Head coach?

I would too. I think that the problem this team has though. They don't act like they like the game, especially this year. Very high end talent got them to 2 ECF's in 3 years and they don't even give a damn. It's frustrating.

That is often the difference in champions. Hockey is a great game to play but when you are skating 3-6 days a week with travel it can become more of a grinding job than a passion. The elite guys seem to keep that passion. That is not a slight at the guys that do not. The NHL season really is a grind. It used to be hard for me to play 1 game after traveling.

Sullivan is a very good coach that’s been stuck on a team being horribly run the last few years. He’s gotten way more from those rosters than anybody had business doing.

That being said, Sullivan would have been the perfect hire for this team during the last two coaching searches. Too much needs to change with this roster with too little talent up front to make this a good fit moving forward.

Drury would also be an absolute fool to jump the gun here and forgo doing an extensive coaching search. At minimum, you get to hear new ideas and perspectives, and try to integrate anything useful into your plan of action moving forward.

I know this is moot since he’ll be signed before Friday, but that’s the plan Drury *should* be following.
I gotta say that I was really impressed that one year they won the cup with blue line scraps.

Outside of Letang, Maatta was a 3rd year nobody coming off a big sophmore slump. Dumoulin was essentially a rookie. Ian Cole was a fringe player who struggled to stay in the lineup for 6 years. Ben Lovejoy was similar but in his 10th season. Trevor Daley was coming off a disastrous year in Chicago. Justin Schultz got shipped from EDM after a disappointing season and was a -78 over 4 seasons at that point. MAF was out for most of the playoffs of post-concussion syndrome so the Penguins had to rely on rookie Matt Murray. They really over achieved with that backend. I think they also had forwards who really helped playing defense as well.

Well.....MSL was a midget coach [no pun intended] before the Habs hired him and he seems to have them going in the right direction .
According to Wiki, MSL turned down our AHL job which I kind of remembered.

Later on he worked for CBJ as a special assistant.

Some Pens fans have said that Sullivan would not put up with the shit that Laviolette did in the locker room but who knows.

Any coach coming here has got to know the score on what has been going on and feel that they have the backing of Drury to deal with it as they need to

Need to clean house. As much as possible. The young and the old. Fill in the gaps with UFA in the short term (and I don't mean plugs) and start building draft capital as the veterans start to "roll off". Keep Sully for the rebuild and show the team that the tail is not going to wag the dog. Enough is enough. No coach is perfect, but at least Sully has stones (or so I hear).

Rangers need a new gimmick:

1st ECF Run: New coach bump, Kreider tip-in and Igor Vezina

2nd ECF Run: New coach bump, PP and Trocheck Line

3rd ECF Run: New coach bump, Flying V and knuckle puck
-Obviously they won't win the Cup because the team eventually realizes the Flying V is a north/south style of play and they eventually revert back to flinging the puck east/west after experiencing adversity when playing against the state of Florida.

Not gonna happen and it'd be silly to trade everyone anyways

Even as disappointing a season as Laf had, he's cost controlled now and it's not an unreasonable contract. Cuylle, Fox, etc. You keep those guys.

But really, they're not gonna tear down and rebuild. Bare bones rebuilds are also ridiculously hard to pull off

I mean the next coach, no matter who he/she is will have battles everywhere. That includes the HIGHLY unlikely Messier.

You have players here who won't play for him or anyone now that they're butthurt.

You have players in or about to decline... some of them severely.

You have kids who don't know what they're doing or SUPPOSED to do & who won't be developed properly or deployed properly by our staff & even if they were, would see the above shit day to day infecting them constantly.

Then you have players that just aren't that good even if they give it "110% effort"... some of whom get mins just 'cus.

Until literally EVERYTHING changes, nothing will change.

Sullivan had Crosby and Malkin in their primes. He’s still probably the best option.

I can see the rationale on both sides of the Sully argument. The Metro has been abysmal, so not sniffing the POs for so long is a red flag. However, he turned the Pens completely around and it seemed like that team consistently performed despite constantly dealing with injuries to core players. Pen’s analytics are also great during his tenure (even during this dark era), which lends some credence to the bad goaltending claims.

Overall, I don’t know what to make of it, but there’s at least some reason for excitement at the prospect of landing him.

I would literally rather have one of @GoAwayPanarin or @Fitzy over guys like Sullivan at this point in their NHL shelf lives and considering how stale this team is/how much it doesn’t need an old boys club retread right now.

Like, I would literally rather hire Matthew McConnaghy to PLAY a coach, and do that while actually coaching us.
