Proposal: Who would be YOUR hire as the new Head coach?

Well we have had former Flyers here including Keenan (won 1994 cup), and Shero (1979 Cup final).

Is this just a internet rumor or someone has proof that Rod has said he loathes the Rangers?
I honestly can't say -- I don't recall ever seeing anything.

I know many do not want Messier, but if there is any team in the NHL that needs a dramatic culture shift it is the Rangers; I think Messier could deliver that accountability and change in the organization. He would just need to hire good assistant coaches.
I just look at what Martin St Louis has done with a young Canadians team. They have taken on the personality of their coach. St. Louis prior coaching experience was as a special teams consultant for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Messier folks (with my father in law being one of them) are in a Captain Cup fog. Sather and Dolan had him around constantly, they know the guy, they know that he cannot lead people the way some of you thinks he can. Doesn't mean that the past few coaches were anything great, but Messier is a risk that makes NO sense. He is not good, at all as an analyst. His takes are playskool level. He can barely communicate. He would probably cry behind the bench after a bad goal (nothing wrong with crying btw!). He probably isn't smart, or tactical, or strategic, or whatever. He might not be able to read or write. We don't know! I could guess it's a combination of all that stuff.

Still want Carle.

Sullivan is a very good coach that’s been stuck on a team being horribly run the last few years. He’s gotten way more from those rosters than anybody had business doing.

That being said, Sullivan would have been the perfect hire for this team during the last two coaching searches. Too much needs to change with this roster with too little talent up front to make this a good fit moving forward.

Drury would also be an absolute fool to jump the gun here and forgo doing an extensive coaching search. At minimum, you get to hear new ideas and perspectives, and try to integrate anything useful into your plan of action moving forward.

I know this is moot since he’ll be signed before Friday, but that’s the plan Drury *should* be following.

And therein lies the difference -- MSL had "prior coaching experience" whereas Messier made it known he wanted top spot without experience and turned down the chance to actually get said experience on the AHL level. Messier would be less successful than Gretzky.

I’m leaning towards a Peca/Muse combo right now, but haven’t landed on a final decision just yet.

Gut feeling is that Pete DeBoer will emerge as a Drury favorite next week, with Jay Pandolfo a dark horse.
I have never understood the reasoning behind firing the head coach only to promote one of the assistants. If either of these guys had the answer to anything, why didn't they speak up all season? BTW, so help me God, if they hire Mike Sullivan and he drags Quinny back in the door, I might stop watching altogether.

Drury has had two separate coaching hires searches in his short tenure as GM and he's been heavily involved in another one before via "connections". I'm sure he knows the market.

I also think that Muse and Peca were retained for a reason to at least be a part of the next coaching group. Will Sullivan be ok with this degree of control? It's him who is going to first choose where to go and then decided who's on his staff. I'd give it 50/50 chance that he comes here.

Muse and Peca weren't exactly "retained" nor where they terminated outright -- reports stated that they would be given the opportunity to interview for a position on the new staff.

Staple suggested Dallas, Edmonton and Vegas all could make changes behind the bench if they lose in the first round. In addition to Sullivan, if DeBoer, Knoblauch, and Cassidy all became available, who would folks prefer out of this quartet?

Pete DeBoer has a law degree, so he could help @EdJovanovski prosecute Drury for crimes against Kravtsov at the Hague

Seems to me Messier would be a crazy gamble as a no experience head coach but I would be okay if he was some sort of an assistant. Even if he is just an inspirational link for the players. Always hoped Leetch would come work with the players as well.

I think that is a fairly good way to handle things. They did not get the blame for this season but they are also not being forced on the new coach.

I highly highly doubt any current Ranger, with maybe the exception of Quick, would care what a Messier has to say. Shit, I don't think they would care what Gretzky would say to them. I can't see someone like Laf looking up to Messier. Zib might get emotional with him in the corner while they hash out some feelings, sure, but this group feels "respectless" to me.

As I recall (and I could be wrong --- again!!!), Mess has made it very clear he will not take an "assistant" position of any kind.

That would be a shame. I would think guys that love the game would have a healthy respect for guys like Mess and Gretz.

I think I would like Tocchet ahead of Sully. Did Tocchet and JT and get along?

I read that Tocchet really liked JT but it was just something on the internet. What do we know that Tocchet does well? His record is not impressive so I'd like to know what we are getting asides from the Tocchet rocket and a guy that fought Barry Beck. :)

I would too. I think that the problem this team has though. They don't act like they like the game, especially this year. Very high end talent got them to 2 ECF's in 3 years and they don't even give a damn. It's frustrating.
