Proposal: Who would be YOUR hire as the new Head coach?

Rangers legend Jeff Halpern is intriguing. Personally I don’t think any new coach, veteran or rookie, will succeed long-term unless the veteran core is significantly changed. Why should we expect anything other than a new coach bump in year 1, then a disorganized mess in year 2. It’s happened 3 times now. It’s the players.

All of the problem children need to be removed from the room.

Jussi Ahokas, Kitchener Rangers. But NYR doesn't have the balls to hire guys like him (euro, non-obc, non-alumni) even for Hartford.

Olli Jokinen, Timrå IK. Again, would require some cojones, even though everyone knows OJ will eventually be a NHL head coach.

I'm biased, I know. But this core is beoynd saving. I low-key want Torts, and would allow Sullivan.

I'd stop recycling guys such as Lavi and bring in a hot, young coach who's never been an NHL HC before.

The obvious choice there is Gardiner MacDougall coaching Moncton Wildcats and likely will get his 2nd Memorial Cup win with just 80 regular season games of coaching in Major Junior . Best coach in the World not in the NHL. This guy can coach....but money is not what drives him . If the Rangers could find a place in the organization for his son....then he might sign on .

I want a defensively minded coach first and foremost. The Rangers just don't have enough talent to compete with the top/elite teams in the league. One way to make yourself competitive is by stressing defense. We all know what a disaster our defensive system was this year: from the lack of a forecheck, to the ease at which opposing teams came through the neutral zone, to their ease of zone entry, to poor down low coverage by our forwards, to how lost our D men were playing man-to-man. I want a coach who will install a defensive system, make players accountable, and stress it as a priority. One name that comes to mind is Jay Leach.

Coaches are a grass is always greener rotating mess in the NHL. Just gotta hope they find the right fit…for now. In two years it’ll be another right fit.

It would be extremely bold on her part. I do hope she eventually lands a HC job (assuming she knows her stuff, don't know), but I don't think this is the gig for her. It's not exactly set up for success, is it?

I do agree that it would be a shock, unless we are talking about Seattle. Promoting within is obviously a different case.

1) Has not been a long-time NHL coach
2) Does not have connections to any of the players on the team
3) Has experience managing adult professionals.

Beyond that, I don't really have any strong preferences. So that crosses off Tortorella, Quenneville, Boudreau, DeBoer (if he gets fired), Sullivan, Tocchet, Carle, and a few others.

I'd be fine with Woodcroft, Leach, Pandolfo, Halpern, Nelson, Campbell, and I'm sure several others I'm forgetting.

Even though he obviously has connections with most of the roster now, since he was on the coaching staff the last 2 years, I'd be fine with Peca too. Mostly because I'm sure he has a list of things he didn't like about what Laviolette was doing.

I don't want someone whose going to approach the roster with any favoritism. I don't want Sullivan to begin with, but I don't mean that kind of short connection. Like, even if I was fine with everything else... I don't want Tocchet because of how well he knows Miller. I want as close to completely fresh eyes on this team as possible.
