He picks his spots, as most superstars do, if they actually drop the gloves. He’s had a good amount fights, though. I think people mistake poor fighter with turtling?

When I was 18 years old I met up with a buddy who was drafted by Tampa Bay. He was always a huge kid growing up, and really turned into a monster in the WHL. Following an away game at my local WHL team, I went down to see him and we talked about his Tampa Bay camp etc etc.

I thought it was awesome when I asked this tough ass 18 year old huge skilled kid, "Hey did you beat up Petr Klima at camp?" He looks at me and says, "You don't know what the f*** you're talking about. They are all tough and ripped solid muscle." Never seen him so serious.

Turns out during a St. Louis exhibition game he tried to fight Shanahan. Well, technically they fought, but I guess Shanny fed him his lunch like a joke. Humbled him.

Ever since I don't really comment on who is or isn't tough, skilled, or a good fighter in the NHL. Some are better than others but many might surprise you. Best fighter I ever saw in the WHL was a middle weight, Paul Ferone. Saw the 5'11 185lbs, and never saw him lose a fight, including a beating he put on Zdena Chara.

That oddly follows my original thought process- “hey, Ennis looks a bit like Faber. He’s, like, 150 pounds though. Wonder if I could fight him, I’d actually have some size.. hold on, Ennis survives in the nhl, I’ve seen dude launch himself like a missile. Nvm, I’m gonna go post on the internet tho.”

I’m convinced Trevor Zegras fights just like Alex Semin.

As for actual fighters in recent time, Liam O’Brien vs Kurtis Gabriel would be a fun one to watch between 2 enforcers who can’t actually win a fight.

Among players who occasionally fight, I would go with Peyton Krebs. I appreciate that he's game to go but he's going to get himself knocked out of the league because he doesn't have the experience or technique... nor is he that big.

Andrew Peters was notably mediocre. Not bad, he hurt Gratton once, but I don’t think anyone feared him. He was just kinda there, you needed an enforcer, he was technically that.

The NHL has a weird way of determining who is the best and worst fighter. It's all about who is the tallest and strongest. That's because none of them can actually fight, and most of them have probably have never fought in a non-hockey setting, official or unofficial.

In a "real" fight, it's not about who has those advantages, it's about who has the quickest hands, most aggression, best defense, best technique, most elusiveness, and yeah power and reach does matter some. There's a reason fighting has different divisions. If the fighting ability is equal, the bigger and stronger fighter will probably win, but that's kind of the point. None of these NHL guys can fight, so it becomes a bigger and stronger contest.

Outside the NHL, A 5'8 160 guy who fights would destroy an NHL player like Leon Draisaitl who is tall and heavy. That's because the fighter is better at fighting. In the NHL a 5'8 160 guy would never have a chance in that fight.
