It was decided the moment the trade happened, because gaining PLD is a loss, and signing him to that contract was insane. Vilardi was the best player in the deal to boot.
I was going to say at best Kings' fans were apprehensive towards the deal.
Getting rid of PLD for anything was a win for Winnipeg.
Yeah, he didn't want to be there.

If Vilardi can stay healthy it will be great for Winnipeg. Iafallo seems like a nice depth piece.

Habs 2nd rounder will be able to get the Jets a solid rental.

Whatever Kupari becomes. Maybe the Jets dona similar deal like they did for Nino. Kupari and a 2nd for a player with term

A 3/4 healthy Vilardi wins this trade alone
Iafallo was always an underrated and useful top sixer, I always said if he were on the east coast he'd be as lauded as Cirelli
Kupari is a useful depth piece with tools and maybe still some upside
mid 2nd is nice

We didn't even get PLD, we've gotten PLD at less than half his average production. Most Kings fans already said up front even if we got the juiced up near-PPG version it would basically take a fully sidelined Vilardi for it to be even. Now, it's just laughable.

Blake got woodshedded, you would think he blocked Chevy's # at this point.

At least everyone is seeing how good Gabe is now

If this were happening in 31 other markets where the hockey media wasn't controlled by 'the state' the organization and GM would be on the hot seat.

Vilardi now playing top line minutes with Connor out and has looked really good. Jets top line has been lethal as of late. I'd say as of right now if the trade was solely vilardi for dubois the jets would've still won the trade.

I don't think the trade will be seen as this lopsided in 2 years.

Rob Blake had to have known the reason why PLD wanted out of Columbus and Winnipeg was because he has grown disinterested in hockey and wants to be somewhere with lots of distractions / things to do.

There are a few teams that can cope with that mindset and potentially turn it around, and I think LA is one.

Not to change, but...

The rumored offer was futures to Winnipeg from Monteeal. No doubt Winnipeg wanted players now to be competitive and made the right choice.

Habs used those, or some of those futures to acquire Alex Newhook. He's injured now, but has more points than PLD.

I'd love to share this optimism but Blake didn't acquire PLD for him to be a long-term project, he acquired him to compete now (allegedly). While I tend to agree with the city, the team culture and structure, and his compadres with Bergevin, Robitaille, Brisson, and more can make him comfortable, I don't think you need to look much further than last week's head to head with Gabe running all over LA and saying IM NOT DONE I WANT MORE and PLD kinda sorta playing in the game to see their mentalities.

It's crazy if you look at above replacement numbers for LA as a team

Solid depth and a great even strength team
You have the gradual decline of players lower down the totem pole
but still good underlying numbers

PLD is like an outlier from the roster
just brutal
If you were looking at it with no knowledge of the team, and you saw PLD's numbers you be like "yuck, who is that"

As soon as it was announced the Jets were looking for roster players as the return, I said multi times Habs had no chance of getting PLD. Reports were Habs took at least two serious runs at getting PLD but no doubt all they could offer was a futures heavy offer which was no interest to the Jets. Jets were widely criticized by many for not doing a full rebuild and taking futures.....based on this years results the Jets were right wanting roster players back and not rebuilding.
