Who wins the Conn Smythe Trophy?

Sorry for derailing the topic a little bit, I´ve always been wondering this, do you think the league could give the trophy to a player that doesn't play in the finals? For instance, a goalie on a wild card team goes on a massive tear, faces like 40-50 shots a night, makes hasekesque saves, let´s in only 1 or 2 goals per night, drags his sorry ass team in to conference finals where they finally lose. No skater stands out much more than others in the whole playoffs and other goalies are pretty basic. Could they give the trophy to this guy?

Every Conn Smythe winner has played for a team that won at least 15 games during that spring and I do not expect any changes to that.

Connor will still do something to make himself the resounding favourite.

I think we might actually see an Edmonton Toronto final.

So if Toronto wins the cup.....Ill still say McDavid.

Carolina - Aho
Washington - Wilson; Thompson
Toronto - Nylander
Winnipeg - Scheifele
Dallas - Rantanen
Edmonton - Draisaitl
Florida - ??
Vegas - ??
^^not sure it matters anyway both FLA & VGK are done for IMO
In my opinion it's extremely unlikely Edmonton wins without McDavid winning the smythe.

Not that I think Draisaitl isn't great and worthy, I just think the only way Edmonton wins the cup (and I think they will) is if McDavid channels an extra gear, and then one more after that - and if he does, he'll stand out more than Draisaitl. Kind of like it played out last year.

I also think you're sleeping a bit on Ovechkin. I think if Capitals win the cup he's my favorite. Obviously it implies he steps up with big goals, etc - but the narrative to give it to him would be huge.

So - I think McDavid is definitely the favorite, but where I disagree is McDavid winning if Oilers lose.

Win the Smythe in a losing cause as a forward last year? No problem. He should have won, and he did - it was an insane performance. But the bar to win back to back smythes is very high (voter fatigue would suggest McDavid had to stand out by a big gap to win in year 2). The bar to win back to back smythes - in a losing cause - has got to be absolutely astronomical. It's not impossible, but I don't see that happening.

Rants or McDavid

This thread needs a poll.

It feels early for a poll though. At this point we're mostly picking which teams people think will make the finals, as opposed to choosing among players.

Rantanen is the obvious MVP if playoffs ended today - but voting for him is meaingless unless you're convinced Dallas makes the cup.

Why not?
McDavid right now has 13 even strenght points. There's a really good shot that McDavid can break Gretzky's single season record for even strenght points while losing in the finals. McDavid putting up 36+ even strenght points would give him a really strong case to win the Smythe. Plus hockey voters loves a good story and there's really no better story than McDavid winning 2 Conn Smythes without winning a cup.
On top of that there's always a chance that McDavid could go really crazy and break the all time points record with a 48+ point performance. Then you really have to give him the Conn Smythe!

Leafs - William Nylander
Caps - Logan Thompson
Canes - Sebastien Aho
Panthers - Anton Lundell
Dallas - Mikko Rantanen
Winnipeg - Kyle Connor
Edmonton - Connor Mcdavid
Vegas - Jack Eichel

Florida definitely isn't done. They haven't played a home game this round yet. And the games have been close.

Vegas might be done though
