Who wins the Atlantic?

Leafs are currently 1st with 92 points.

Points% only matters in extreme circumstances like not everybody getting to play 82 games.

But short of a meteor hitting and killing the entire human race everybody will play 82 games so points% doesn't matter.
Well some use it, because it offsets the discrepancy in games played, just to see who is actually slightly ahead.

Myself I just look at win loss differential to determine order. Then the first tie breaker.
Which is the leafs, same win loss differential, but leafs have tie breaker.

Points % is a true measure of how teams measure up.

It doesn't matter, as only final standings matter. Current points also don't matter either for the same reason.

For purposes of exactly where teams stand right now, the Panthers are in 1st place.

This is why points % was used in the Covid season. It's a true measure of how teams rank relative to each other.

The Leafs are higher in the "standings" right now, but the Panthers have a better "record".

If teams are what their record says they are, which is the case as it's the only objective measuring stick, then currently the Panthers are slightly better than the Leafs.

Another note, in 2022, when the Bills Bengals game was cancelled because of the player's medical emergency, final standings were done by winning percentage, not wins. This is how standings are sorted when there is an uneven # of games.

Most people would use each teams' record to determine their rankings. Then again, not everybody understands statistics. The 1/3 pound burger failed in the states because many people thought a 1/4 pounder was bigger.

I actually think the 3rd place Lightning will win the division, as they are the hottest team of the 3 right now, and Kucherov seems to be scoring at an insane rate.

Don’t really have any major qualms with your overall comments on points percentages, but this statement is just false.

The only way the Panthers become 1st is by you presuming they get points in their next game. You are trying to extrapolate the Panthers incredibly marginal point per game lead to place them ahead, but the reality is the two teams have the same number of points and the Leafs have the tie breaker, so any discussion of who is higher in points percentage really is inconsequential because standings simply don’t work that way.

It would be fair to say the Panthers have the edge points percentage and the potential to be ahead when games played are equalized but saying they are actually first “where teams stand right now” is just not reality.

some things

#1 there was a 1/3 pound burger?

#2 people don't understand fractions.?

3 there won't be an uneven number of games this year so points% doesn't matter

To confirm, at 5:09pm on March 30, the Leafs are measured as the team that's first in the Atlantic, correct? Coincidentally they are also 1st in the standings.

Yes after Panthers loss this afternoon, leafs due jump to 1st P%, using what other poster was using (P%), (and points).

The Leafs were always in 1st in what matters. % is great for trying to equalize uneven number of games, but you don't get credit for games not played. It shouldn't be assumed they will be a win, that's why in a points based systems the team with the most points is ahead. Regardless of games played.

But you already knew that.

I also prefer points percentage, when you see at times 4-5 games difference in games played from highest to lowest teams. It removes discrepancies.

I use won loss differential for standings personally,
which is basically what NBA and MLB use (games behind leader), (their rankingsa are similar to P%)….but you already knew that.

I can’t see the Panthers winning it.

They play like they don’t care about winning. Boring and amemic. Looks like they are just coasting.

On the other hand, Toronto and Tampa don’t seem to be playing their best hockey either….so who knows…
Panthers just played back to back Stanley cup. They are tired. The coach is probably resting his best players before the playoff. They are still the favourite to make it to the final.

They are not the same team at all. They lost half their defense and a bunch of depth and now this year have core guys who aren't even healthy.

37 year old Marchand is not scaring anyone tbh. He's at the stage of his career he flashes what he was once in a while but most nights he is not part of the solution.
