Feel like the correct answer is the one who you feel is more likely to hit the open market.

That's why I voted for Rantanen in the poll. Marner has a full NMC though and possibly has the Leafs bent over a barrel when it comes to negotiating an extension with them, but he might be more likely to stay where he is than test the open market. Rantenten, however, just got traded, so Carolina has a very short window in which to convince him to stay and sign an extension rather than test the UFA market.

Let's hope he doesn't get Klingberged.

Why not?

He's made more money in his career than most will in his lifetime. If he was too greedy to take the offer from Colorado then that is on him. And if he doesn't pan out and declines significantly, then great than an NHL team didn't waste money on him. However I still think he gets overpaid.

The one who hasn't been a Playoff ghost.

Marner has been an incredibly consistent performer for years. And he just had a pretty strong showing at 4 nations too.

I've always liked Rantanen - but I think his stretch in Carolina is absolutely killing his value. I know it's only 8 games so far, so he can still bounce back, but it's got to raise all kind of alarms as he heads to UFA if he doesn't bounce back significantly. He's starting to get very strong Huberdeau vibes, who crashed and burned as soon as he left Florida, despite getting a huge contract.

I voted Marner gets more.

I struggle to see how Marner’s current NMC gives him an advantage in negotiating his next contract

Mikko Rantanen's value is plummeting.

He should've accepted Colorado's offer

He will still get the biggest UFA contract in NHL history should be reach free agency. Sure he hasn't looked great in Carolina but hes still firmly in his prime, not to mention GMs will always pay free agents for past performance. He could go pointless the rest of the season and he wouldn't lose any money as a free agent.

His own team walked away from him.

If there’s a GM dumb enough to give him what Colorado offered or more then I feel bad for the fans of that Team

I think you underestimate just how desperate some teams are once the free agent market opens.

Marner is by far the better player so.. him

His own team would also gladly take him back if he somehow manages to hits free agency.

But to answer the question I think Marner will. If they both were after chasing the bag their contracts would be very similar, but after this stint in Carolina I bet Rants will choose one of his top teams, even if it means taking a bit less.

I think the Leafs are waiting to see how Marner does in the playoffs before resigning him. If it's the same song and dance, I think they make a big offer to Rantanen if he gets to free agency.

No, I don't think this take makes sense. The perception Colorado had was Mikko is a complementary player who got so many points because he played alongside MacKinnon most of the time.

If he doesn't get points in Carolina, GMs will notice, especially if Necas continues to outscore him the rest of the season which he's doing right now (as of this post Necas has 12 points in 11 games compared to 3 in 8 for Rants)

EDIT: Mikko scored 2 points in tonight's game so has 5 points in 9 games so far with Carolina (thx @RoyIsALegend)

Slight correction. As of your post, Rantanen has 5 points in 9 games.

He had a goal and an assist tonight in Carolina’s win.
