Speculation: Who Will Be Signed?

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm surprised, I thought Davidson did enough to get a contract, his lack of speed/skating are the only reasons I can think of as to not sign him as I liked that he worked hard and has some hands.

I thought Tourigny would get signed and say he replaces Galipeau's spot, but seeing how they never bothered to call him up and Galipeau was at his best that I've ever seen him in the 2nd half this year so I can see why they opted not to sign Tourigny since we surely are now getting overcrowded on the bluelines.

Didn't think Guindon would get signed, good speed and works hard but so small and just didn't seem to impress at all this year in the little i saw of him.

Nurmi I never paid much attention to but the little I did I wasn't impressed so never thought they would sign him. Finland has not been kind to the Habs since Saku.

I never thought Smilanic would get signed as there are some rumors about him in his Freshman year that led to him leaving Quinnipiac. But then again look at Danny Kristo who was suspended not once but twice for drinking including almost losing toes to frostbite. Wish him good luck though as he is fast as shit so if he can ever get things back on track.

Galipeau left for the DEL so his spot is open.

Galipeau left for the DEL so his spot is open.

I meant it as they must have figured out he wasn't worth giving a shot to in Laval since Galipeau stepped up maybe they felt there was no reason as I thought they would since he was one of the top U-22 producing blueliners. I thought maybe the plan would have been for Tourigny to take his spot next season but either he was never in the plans or they just figured out at some point he wasn't progressing enough to get an NHL contract.

I wasn't a big fan of Galipeau but I did like his 2nd half so I was a little surprised to hear he left for the DEL but more money is a good idea too.

Why wait if you're HuGo? I think the lack of news is a clear indication he's not getting an NHL contract. I'm sure they have already reviewed his performance, double checked with AHL staff and team scouts, and have made up their minds. Not much new information to be assessed at this point unless they're waiting on a medical report from his late season upper body injury.

There's little leverage for a prospect turning 22 in July. He would be lucky to negotiate anything other than the bare minimum ELC contract. There's no reason to wait until the last minute from MTL's side. I think his best chance now is to entertain an AHL contract or look elsewhere.
I was completely wrong on this one. No idea why they waited so long

Still waiting on Guindon and Tourigny. I'd give both of them at least an AHL contract offer with Guindon starting in TR and Tourigny fighting to be AHL 6-9D.

Biondi and Nurmi I'd be surprised if they get something.

Almost like I knew what I was talking about

Andersson was solid player in Laval.
He'd be good to bring back. You want good veterans for top farm team.
According to a Swiss sport news reporter, Andersson and EHC Biel (swiss league) have been talking contract. The reporter said he was confirmed by multiple sources the contract was already signed, but the EHC Biel GM denied it but did said Andersson was a person of interess to him.

And no, I don't take an habit of checking EU hockey news. I stumbled on that reading something else yesterday.

So Tourigny becomes a free agent. His ECHL contract expires. I am surprised Guindon wasn't signed yet. As for Nurmi, that's it I would guess.

That's it for Smilanic and Nurmi.

Maybe Guindon wants to try the NHL draft before looking at AHL contracts.

As for Tourigny, maybe he wants to look around for a better offer, but I hope we sign him to an AHL contract if we can.

Guindon on an AHL contract to play in TR would be ok. No place in Laval for another rookie taking up a spot a veteran should hold if the team wants to compete.

Tourigny has no place in Laval with both Hutson and Mailloux there. D spots need to be filled with guys who can actually play defense. If he goes to Europe, circle back to him next year, if there is a need for a player like him after the other two move up to Montreal.

Can't say I see much potential with Guindon anymore, even in the AHL. He has not developed at all in the past 3 years, he really hit a complete wall. He's ECHL/lesser euro league fodder at best at this point.

3 less players on the summer prospects poll, Treb! (Maybe 4? I'm hearing different reports on Smilanic's rights).

Can't say I'm surprised by any of these non-signings. They all seem like the right decisions.

Saturday is the deadline to sign:

- Jared Davidson
- Cedric Guindon
- Miguel Tourigny
- Petteri Nurmi

I'm not sure why Nurmi is listed on CapFriendly as his rights expiring 2 years after being drafted. He was drafted out of Europe, which usually gives you 4 years to sign them. Is it maybe because he was drafted as an overager? I believe he was 20 when he was selected.

Believe that is the case. Montreal had two years to sign him based on his age at the time he was drafted.

Nurmi averaged over 20 minutes of ice time in his third Liiga season with HPK - and received a contract extension.

But looks like his game is more fit for that league than North America; though it'll be interesting to see if he is signed as a free agent one day.
