I wonder if Kirk Muller will be a candidate. He was the last head coach Rutherford hired in Carolina but Rutherford and Muller have not found a fit together since.

I don’t like bringing on a coach to “create” an identity. That’s something GMs did back in the day. I prefer management to figure out our identity and acquire players and hire coaches that fit into how the team wants to play.

I always view the draft as the best way to figure out a GM’s vision (although it’s not always applicable).
Draft is a great place to find what teams are looking for, just not the Canucks.

Management did say they didn't like the way Bruce was playing and that's why they went with Tocchet. For the players the Canucks have someone in the middle of that would work well.

Interesting comment from Sat on Malhotra, here. I don't think he'd just toss that out there if it wasn't something that was being felt or communicated internally.

I can't remember who it was, someone athletic related, suggesting malhotra for the penguins job.

Credibility to be respected by vets, good with young players. Dubas hired him in Toronto.

Meh. It just could be another instance of a local sports guy drumming up hype for the team's AHL coach. Having options does not mean having a serious chance at an NHL head coaching job. There was similar hype surrounding Green before we hired him and while there were actual interview request(s) that we turned down, that doesn't not equate to an high chance of landing an NHL head coaching job.

Regardless, I doubt Malhotra would leave if he was offered the head coaching position here (unless the term and money is drastically different). His family obviously likes living here (Vancouver is home for his wife). Does his family want to move to Pittsburgh?

His kid plays in the BCHL now but is committed to BU in 2026-2027. Not sure if that factors into anything.

If it's between Vancouver and elsewhere he takes the Canucks job no doubt in my mind. But staying in Abbotsford versus getting an NHL gig, he's taking the NHL job. He left Vancouver and moved to Toronto for a job before I think he'd do it again, especially for a head coach position.

From what was reported last week, it wasn't that he left Vancouver but ownership wouldn't give him a raise and he wasn't offered a contract when his expired.

I should have clarified, i just meant that he's moved his family out of Vancouver for work once before.(circumstances of why, aside.)

I think he would do it again especially for a head coach position. But if the Canucks job is there he takes it.

I completely agree.

Well to be fair, Malholtra was utilized as an "eye in the sky" coach and there was a better opportunity in Toronto at the time.

Listened to Brandon Astle's intermission interview with Manny Malhotra during last night's Abby Canucks broadcast on Sportsnet 650.

He's such an articulate coach, with a real feel for what's going on with his players. Obviously having a long NHL career as a player, and understanding the local hockey market, is a huge advantage.

I'm really pulling for the guy. Sooner or later (and hopefully sooner) the NHL needs some new blood in its coaching ranks. Malhotra's lack of experience as an NHL head-coach doesn't concern me at all. Besides, he's spent seven years as an NHL assistant, so he's paid his dues.

I'm glad it was the Ducks who hired Quenneville. I'd be seriously bummed out of he'd been hired in Vancouver.

Drance was saying that the team might be interested in a bridge coach. Manny ain't ready. The name he mentioned was Mike Yeo. As much as he was basically a meme pick , I don't hate it.

They also joked shout making Hughs dad the coach. He was a coach on a bad KHL team apparently. They should find a role for him though. Pay him 400k.

The problem is that it’s a logistical nightmare. How long is the bridge? Is it 1 year? 2? If it’s 3 you don’t worry about Malhotra. If it’s 1-2, Malhotra needs to be under contract and agree not to go to another team before that time. Then you need to find a coach who is willing to sign a 2 year contract (or have Aquilini pay for a coach you intend to fire). I think the number of coaches willing to come to coach for 2 years is limited.

If we are going to bring in guys like Yeo, I rather have Shaw.

One concern with Sturm is that the Kings’ player development has been bad especially at forward. It’s not all on Sturm but then it goes back to the fact that he hasn’t done much to distinguish himself. I would still rather give Nelson a shot.

Mitch Love is the guy I want us to hire , young guy only 40 , has 5 years of head coaching experience , definitely has played a huge part in Washington’s resurgence this season , and has a proven track record of developing players . I want to look at Rasmus Sandin these last two seasons as a prime example , and especially in Calgary I look at how Connor Zary and Dustin Wolf have developed as he coached them in the AHL. I Should also note that Jakob Chychrun has had the best season of his career this season.

After Love I want Malholtra then Sturm. I want a younger coach who can grow with this team . Especially after seeing Carbery’s success with Washington.

Love was there last season with Washington when they were very mid. They added a lot. Chychrun, Roy, PLD. Those are big pieces. Mitch is near top of my list as well. That success probably has to do with improving the roster quite a bit and players like Protas and McMichael coming into their prime years.

New York Islanders’ GM Search
  • Ken Holland was in the mix for the Islanders but Friedman is now reserving judgment on where they will be going with this search
Los Angeles Kings’ GM Search
  • Aren’t sure if it will be an internal promotion
  • Has heard Holland’s name connected to the Kings if they look at external candidates
Marco Sturm and the Canucks
  • Reiteriates Irfaan Gaffar report that the Canucks have interview Marco Sturm
  • He wants to be an NHL head coach; would be very happy to be the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks
  • Is ambitious and understands players; is respected and has a good reputation
  • Is the kind of person that would intrigue the Canucks because you don’t have to convince him to come there but rather he wants it and would be happy to have it
  • Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets an in-person interview and works his way into serious contention
  • Don’t think the Canucks are the only team looking at him; has a history with the Bruins; Friedman doesn’t have a great feel for what the Bruins are doing with their head coaching position

Man when I started this thread a few weeks back I put Marco Sturm in this discussion because he interviewed for the Sharks head coaching job a year ago that went to Warofsky in the end and I saw his name in an article about potential head coaching candidates because I figured the Canucks would do a thero search .

Never in my wildest dreams did I actually think he would have a shot at the job . What a surprise

What's the timing on this? I would think they'd prefer a head coach in place before the draft. Mid June?

Sounds like the first round of interviews are happening this week with in-person interviews expected to take place next week. A possible complication seems to be that they are talking to AHL coaches and some of them are still in the playoffs (Malhotra and Nelson for example).

I would expect the Canucks to have a head coach within the next two weeks, however.
