Who Will be Our New Captain?

Would love for it to be Staal. He's been my favorite ranger, but all the injuries have kept him out of the spotlight. Hopefully people recognize him more as he's a great player and energetic.

However, I can totally see McDonagh claiming that captaincy in 3-4 years.
 
It should be Staal. However, I'd feel more comfortable in giving him the C if he has intentions resigning here after his contract is up and not leaving for Carolina.

If he wants to leave, I'd have no problem with this team having 3As.

Staal - (A)
Stepan - (A)
Boyle* - (A)
McDonagh - (A)

Or possibly flip Girardi and Staal.

*If Boyle is gone, D. Moore - (A)

I really don't see McDonagh as the eventual captain. I would love to see him with an 'A' for a long time, a la Brian Leetch. Nash does nothing except score a lot, which is fine, but I don't like him with a letter. 'A' due to injuries is alright I guess. I could see Hagelin with an 'A' down the road.

no way he comes back in the offseason.. id rather resign Dom Moore and let Miller or Lindberg make the team... Boyle has been here for 5 years. its time to move on..
 
He's a good player for us, it's not unlikely that he'll be resigned. But, that it why I also included Dominic Moore. If he stays, I'd love to see Byron with a letter. D.Moore I would like as well. I'm a fan of players like that getting Alternates.

If we're really trading Callahan and buying out Richards, I think it's important that we keep as much of the leadership in the locker room as possible. As such, Boyle should be re-signed as long as it is a reasonable number. Moore too.
 
Staal - Captain

Staal is a long serving alternate and one of the longest tenured Rangers on this team. As long as he shows intent to stay with the Rangers, he deserves the C.

Girardi - Alternate

Girardi is already the third Alternate and wears the A if any other leader is injured. As such, Girardi gets the permanent A assuming he has signed a new contract.

Nash - 2nd Alternate (Next Season)

This might be unpopular, but I think Nash gets the 2nd A instead of McDonagh or Stepan. He is the team's premiere forward and a former captain (albeit of a terrible team). I think seniority reigns and Nash gets the A.
 
Staal and Richards are the first choice "A"s right now. So one of them. Probably Staal given the circumstances. Richards should consequently be in the poll.

But I think it's more likely that Staal, Richards, and Girardi all wear "A"s

For next year, I think Staal and Girardi are frontrunners.
 
Talking really long term (5+ years), do you think Miller winds up with a letter? Does he have some leadership in him?

As of today, I would say it's more likely Stepan, but that could change in 2-3 years.
 
I voted McD, but maybe its smart to give it to Staal to make it more likely that he stays? (I know, Cally is leaving etcetcetc, but it can't hurt)
 
Staal, Girardi, and Callahan are the longest tenured skaters, I think Staal or Girardi would be great choices going forward.

If I was to choose, I'd lean towards Girardi if he signs his long contract with us vs Staal, who we don't know about past next season.
 
I think it wi be Staal or McDonagh. I would live for Hank to be named an unofficial captain though.
 
I think Staal would be a great choice, if he is locked up long term.

All that he has had to battle through, and the way he lets his play do the talking I'm sure are very well respected qualities.
