I'm not a big Messier fan, but it's really amazing how overlooked he has become. If you took this poll in 1995 he would have run away with it. The second half of the decade he was nearing 40 and had his leadership mystique ruined similar to Toews these days. But there's a really compelling argument as to whether a prime early-90s Messier was better than guys like Lindros and Forsberg.
Messier of the early nineties didn't always have the edge consistently like the force he was at his zenith in the late eighties, at that time, yeah I'd take prime Messier over Forsberg. This is why a guy like Roenick became so exciting for people in the early nineties, he sort of took off where Messier left off.
Lindros though was just so much bigger and stronger, you look at the quote Neil Smith made, and remember that Messier played for him (and of course the Rangers tried so hard to get Lindros even with Messier).
