Who was faster in their prime Ovi or Sid?

wasn't there some numbers early in OV's career about his acceleration/start/1st 3 strides being the best in the league back then?
That was terrible data collection, please don't repost that.

And that was post-prime OV anyway

No one seems to remember how explosive prime Ovi was. He had better acceleration and top end speed. Didn't last too long though so Sid definitely wins for better speed throughout their careers but at his peak, Ovi was definitely the stand out.

Yeah anyone saying this isn’t close one way or the other does not remember correctly or are extremely biased. Crosby had comparisons to Pavel Bure as a skater when he broke in and Ovechkin was basicaly the fastest skater with the puck at his size the NHL had ever seen. Seriously both were a lot faster than a lot of people remember at the peak of their skating abilities. I always thought that if anything Crosby before the high sprain was slightly faster though, but Ovechkin was more dangerous on the rush due to his size and shot combined with his speed and physicality.

I definitely think young Ovechkin’s rush game meant his speed was more highlighted in people’s memory. Crosby’s “grinder/cycle” game tends to be what he’s remembered for, but he could fly when he first came in

I think OV was a faster/more explosive skater in his prime, as Crosby was never quite the same after his high-ankle sprain. It was still close, though. Sid is an example of player who accomplished incredible things, despite having such bad injury luck throughout his prime.

Why would a high ankle sprain have such a negative impact long term on a persons speed?

I’ve seen many people mention it in this thread and never heard of a sprain being that detrimental long term.

Not saying it’s not true but it seems really odd to me.

As you get older everything has an effect on your overall long term health

It’s true for a year, year and a half tops.
Anything after that is an excuse

Crosby the better all around player and ovechkin got the edge in goal scoring + more physical that's about it. Pretty much I would choose Crosby in every situation.

Yep I’m about to go back and watch some old Crosby highlights, it’s been a while

Well for what it's worth Crosby’s speed at his peak from 2009-14 is also underrated. He had regained a lot of it back by then but still didn’t have it quite to where it was in 2005-08. IIRC it was quite a bad high ankle sprain that noticeably affected his skating for some time.

We got our first "didn't read the title of the thread whatsoever" answer!

That’s nice, but what about the thread topic.?

This was well after Crosby’s high ankle sprain. Look at clips of young Crosby if you don’t think it’s close.

Pavel Bure.
I always thought of him as Bure in Lindros' body. Terrifying!

Probably one of those things too where it took some time to get 100%, and by then the game was also slowing down a bit and he was focusing more on cycle play, he was dealing with other injuries and not quite as balls to the wall anymore, etc.

I think Crosby is the better skater but OV was like a bull, both going in a straight line Im not really sure who has the higher speed
If you threw both of them out of an airplane in a straight line they would probably descend at the same rate sure

Ovie was famous for blowing by people, backing them off with speed, and then firing the puck past them. Sid never had those sorts of skills.

The revisions for Crosby are seemingly a bottomless well. If someone asked which player was best at drawing with sidewalk chalk, half the forum would swear Crosby was legendary at it.
What a wild take. They both had very good top end speed and were very quick players. Saying Sid “never had those sorts of skills” to skate past defenders is disingenuous at best.

Not every comment needs to be a crusade against Crosby and/or Crosby fans, man.

This was when McDavid was still in juniors, believe it was his 16 year old season.
