Who to sign to change the DNA?

I don't disagree, but with marner, they still came up short.

marner isn't the only player who might move on, as Tavares, apparently, isn't onboard with the offers, according to "insiders."

Highest scoring player on the Panthers this year, 81 points.
They don't play anything like the Panthers

I have no expectations - I believe this project is over, that the Leafs are incapable of competing for the cup with this group, and that we are simply playing out the remaining 3 years of Matthews time here before we ultimately have to start again.

A wasted era.
Yup. The biggest fear people should have is not starting the rebuild now, it’s holding on for another 3-4 years before realizing the rebuild has started. Then another 5-7 years on top of the 3-4.

They're obliged to see out the final 3 years of this Matthews extension.

What happens when he inevitably leaves at that point, is anyone's best guess.

Worth remember though that this is an organization that has become paralyzed by how risk averse they are. Frozen from fear of doing anything creative or significant or difficult.

It shouldn't surprise anyone if they continue to throw as much poorly spent money at this as possible to see if they squeeze a cup run out of 34 and 88. It will be a waste, but they won't stop trying.

It's always been my biggest concern with Treliving - he's risk averse. He's not creative.

Why Nylander instead of Marner? Because it was easy.
Why rock the boat with Marner, when you can just try and push out the guy with an expiring deal who didn't have trade protection?

He clearly thinks Marner is better... he just offered him more than Nylander too.

It's not necessarily even a question of which one is better, but which one offers you better value to improve your hockey team.

They dangled Nylander for D, and they didn't like the offers they were getting. Instead of moving onto Marner, he just held up their hands and said "nope, there's no way we can improve let's just try the same thing again".
