How can their entire careers be "selective samples"?
Reimer has had more games, he has a larger sample.
Lets look here, these are Reimer's Last 2 years and Berniers entire NHL career.
James Reimer 67 GP
Min GA EN SO GAA W L T Svs Pct
1879 97 2 3 3.1 14 14 4 877 90 %
1856 76 0 4 2.46 19 8 5 919 92.40 %
Total Mins: 3735 Svs: 1796 Sv%: 91.21%
Jonathan Bernier 62 GP
Min GA EN SO GAA W L T Svs Pct
0768 24 0 1 1.88 09 3 1 282 92.20%
0890 35 1 1 2.36 05 6 2 348 90.80%
1378 57 1 3 2.48 11 8 3 595 91.30%
0185 04 0 1 1.30 03 0 0 90.0 95.70%
0238 16 2 0 4.03 01 3 0 102 86.40%
TOTAL Mins: 3459 Saves: 1417 SV%: 91.25%
We can see that James gets alot more work in terms of shots and minutes. This is the Statistical difference in the work: Reimer gets 0.48 Saves per min, while bernier gets 0.41 Saves per min. Therefore comparisons between their careers are not ideal. Arguments can be made either way whether or not more Svs per minute are better for the Goalie, as as to whether more shots will cause a higher or lower SV%.
It's also worthy to mention that Reimer has played more Games in addtition to the samples I use. Reimer has an additional 37 games in his career, however we aren't sure what would happen if Bernier played an extra season. So I chose to compare them this way. Reimer has played better Career to Career though.
Now Pre-Season Reimer has played better, I think he should be the starter IF we were choosing now. But I like the idea of testing Bernier vs. his hometown team, when his family is watching. Reimer can start be the 1A vs Bernier 1B.
