Who should take the blame in Toronto for letting Marner walk and get nothing in return?

100pt players don't grow on trees. Marner is an elite impact player. He was the Leafs best player this season. Leafs could have addressed some of their weaknesses had they been able to trade Marner instead of having him walk for nothing. He had a NTC so Leafs management's hands were tied. Treliving tried to trade him for Rantanen at the deadline but Marner would not waive his clause.

Who should take the blame? Dubas for giving him that term with a NTC? Or Shanahan?

100 point players that disappear come playoff time don't grow on trees either.

Dumbass and Shanahan. Both guys are no longer here, thankfully.

Best player for us in the regular season no doubt, playoff ghost as usual though. Sucks we couldn't trade him, but not overly upset he's walking, guy just doesn't have the balls it takes to win in the playoffs. He can be a great complementary player on a team where he's option 3 or 4, just doesn't have what it takes to perform under pressure as one of the main guys.

Good GMs never give NTCs. The same thing applies to listening to trade and contract re-negotiation demands. If all GMs in MLB, NFL, NBA, & NHL do any of those 3 things, they're all bad.

As a Habs fan. The fault is definitely with Brandon Shanahan.

Dubas tried to trade one of the core 4 before the NMCs kicked in and was fired that same week.

Marner had a NMC and his wife was expected to give birth less than a month after the trade deadline so can't blame him for not waiting.

When Brad showed up the NMC kicked in like 2 weeks later and his boss fired the previous guy for trying to trade Marner.

100% on Shanny.
Everything goes back to shanahan.

Shouldn't Elite Impact players have an impact?

It's also annoying when daddy sticks his nose into contract negotiations. Let some other team find out the hard way.

Shanahan is one of the worst idiots to ever gain any power in Toronto.

Ballard's last 13 years: 2 playoff round wins
Shanahan's 11 years: 2 playoff round wins

And he got very rich doing it. I believe he made $7 million a year in his last deal.

You said Toronto wasn't going to try and trade Marner. They literally tried to trade Marner

Overall the blame is at the feet of 2 people:
1 - Brendan Shanahan. His insistence on running it back was obviously insane, when Dubas suggested they should change something he was immediately fired and Shanahan personally called the core 4 to tell them they were safe
2 - Kyle Dubas. The Marner contract is one of the worst contracts in franchise history. You gave him literally everything and a full NMC in the final year of the deal. Without the NMC we would have Mikko Rantanen right now. Thanks dubas....

Stop saying shit. It was obvious Toronto wasn't going to trade Marner before the playoffs, especially given how good he looked at the 4Nations. But he didn't play as good as expected in the postseason again, and Toronto decided (it looks like) to not resign him, and it was too late to trade him. It's as simple as this. There is nobody to blame, the situation is pretty typical.
Typical for Treliving, but actually no…this situation is not typical at all. This level of free agent rarely hits free agency without being traded first

Also, they did try to trade him. So, no to that part of your post too

The leafs were trying to win so you couldnt trade marner and still claim that you were serious about winning.

Regardless of his past, any scenario where leafs went deep ran through marner. The only way they could trade him while staying true to their objective was by trading him for another star, but stars usually arent available. This was a rare year where a star did become available in rantanen and marner rejected it.

So who is to blame? I think its not easy to answer. Its best to say that things didnt work and now its best for both sides to move on.

(Edited to avoid past tense and present tense confusion)

The blame goes to Marner. If he performed well in the playoffs, the market wouldn't have turned on him, management would have given him whatever he wanted, and thus he wouldn't want to leave.

He is an exceptionally gifted player in an exceptionally brutal market. If he's going to be all about the money (and I don't blame him for that), he needs to perform when it matters.

Now it looks like he's going to leave the team he grew up cheering for. He will go to the highest bidder and will almost certainly have an easier time living up to the contract in a market that doesn't want to crucify him.

It is what it is. I'll miss him, but it was time for both sides to move on.

Marner is no more to blame than Matthews, Nylander, Rielly and Tavares. He’s just the easy scapegoat as his contract is up.
Change needs to happen and he’s the easiest guy to let walk.

Yes, because they've gone so far with him at $11.5M. Jacking his salary a few extra million won't improve things.

It's not on tre!

Im not making that comment in reference to the future. Its a comment in reference to while he was signed in Toronto.

Why would those guys be blamed for Marner walking? They all share the blame for the team's failures, but their individual failures are theirs alone.

He's a 100 pt player once. In an NHL season he has had a triple digit stat in points one time. I'm sure he's 'been on pace' and his advanced numbers are real good. He's Jonathan Hubris-deau. He makes a neat pass every once in a while. He will go to another market and kind of drift off the map, huberdeau-esque.

Given a mojority of fans don't care if Marner walks, l'd say it's no big deal. He'll fleece some other team, maybe yours!
