Just curious. Is there any "owner" of the NHL?
How does it already work? Where goes the profit, that the league generate?

Officially, the NHL is a non-profit corporation.
Don't dumb this down for no reason.Bettman would probably be the closest thing to an owner the NHL has.

Bettman is not anywhere close to being an "owner" of the NHL.
Might be more accurate to say "Bettman has taken ownership of the NHL's overall interests"... which is what he's employed to do.
I still wouldn't use the term "ownership" there, Killion. It'd be more accurate to say that Bettman has a fiduciary responsibility to take care of the NHL's overall interests.

...perhaps a matter of semantics gp.
When you see people say things like, "The NHL made 2.1 billion last year", they're generally combining the profit generated by the 30 (soon to be 31) member clubs + national television deals, merchandise, etc. This figure is released by the NHL yearly, I believe.
Not for profit means that all revenue must be reinvested into the organization in some way. This is revenue sharing, escrow, and Gary Bettman's salary.
Didn't somebody try to buy the entire NHL a decade ago? Before IceArizona made the *bought 1/31st of the NHL* comment.

Bettman does make more money that Arizona and Florida combined...Don't dumb this down for no reason.

Nobody owns the NHL. It's a collection of 31 separately owned franchises. The centrally driven revenue is divided amongst its member clubs based on agreed upon revenue sharing.
Officially, the NHL is a non-profit corporation.
It is a non-profit and each franchise has a seat on the board of governors (equivalent of a board of directors).
Not-for-profit organization (not charitable non-profit).
$$ earned is used for expenses (league costs) and remainder (as agreed by BOG) distributed to the 31 teams.
There are 31 entity owners/members of the Board of Governors.
No, the NHL is covered by fees that the clubs pay to keep the central office operating. The revenues generated at that central level -- national TV, merchandising, league sponsorships, etc. -- are distributed to the individual clubs and then taxed there.
Think of it as a legal consortium/joint venture.
