Who owns NHL?

Nobody owns the NHL. It's a collection of 31 separately owned franchises. The centrally driven revenue is divided amongst its member clubs based on agreed upon revenue sharing.

It is a non-profit and each franchise has a seat on the board of governors (equivalent of a board of directors).

Officially, the NHL is a non-profit corporation.

Not-for-profit organization (not charitable non-profit).

$$ earned is used for expenses (league costs) and remainder (as agreed by BOG) distributed to the 31 teams.

There are 31 entity owners/members of the Board of Governors.

When you see people say things like, "The NHL made 2.1 billion last year", they're generally combining the profit generated by the 30 (soon to be 31) member clubs + national television deals, merchandise, etc. This figure is released by the NHL yearly, I believe.

Not for profit means that all revenue must be reinvested into the organization in some way. This is revenue sharing, escrow, and Gary Bettman's salary.

Don't dumb this down for no reason.

Bettman is not anywhere close to being an "owner" of the NHL.

Might be more accurate to say "Bettman has taken ownership of the NHL's overall interests"... which is what he's employed to do.

I still wouldn't use the term "ownership" there, Killion. It'd be more accurate to say that Bettman has a fiduciary responsibility to take care of the NHL's overall interests.

Didn't somebody try to buy the entire NHL a decade ago? Before IceArizona made the *bought 1/31st of the NHL* comment.

No, the NHL is covered by fees that the clubs pay to keep the central office operating. The revenues generated at that central level -- national TV, merchandising, league sponsorships, etc. -- are distributed to the individual clubs and then taxed there.

Think of it as a legal consortium/joint venture.

Ya, Bain Capital & Game Plan LLC offered them $3.5B (then upped it to $4B) back in 05 during the 1st Lockout. Presentation made to all 30 Teams. This was at a time when many of the clubs figured the problems couldnt be solved, $500M in losses etc etc etc. This wouldve seen each club receiving on average $117M per franchise in a buy-out, on a sliding scale, some teams receiving $75M (Anaheim for eg) while others like NY & Toronto receiving considerably more than the avg. Apparently the presentation well rec'd but no, obviously "no deal".

Bettman would probably be the closest thing to an owner the NHL has.

No. He's the CEO of the NHL and is employed by the Board of Directors (Board of Governors) and which is currently controlled by chairman Jeremy Jacobs aka the most powerful man in the League.

Its not owned by Anita McCambridge, nor is it being folded as a tax right off or relocated to a retirement community in St Petersburg, FL. Although, the latter did briefly occur from 1993-1996 when the Lightning played at Tropicana Field (Thunderdome) but not the entire League. :D

The posts above should sum it up for you, alko
