Who is to blame on Senators inconsistency?

The Senators are a high scoring team, ranking 6th in goals scored. However, they are 21st in the league on the powerplay and 30th on the penalty kill.

The Senators are obviously a wildly inconsistent team, I am just wondering what has to change for us to be more consistent. Management? Coaches? Players?
 
Basically all our players that came from the AHL played on high scoring defensively poor teams. Should anyone be surprised that our NHL team made up largely of organizationally developed players sucks at defense?


Organization has trouble teaching defense.

Consistency tends to come with age and experience. In order to get more of the former, we'll need to accumulate more of the latter.
 
Next year we will have what I hope is a full season of a good top 4 and that should help.
 
Our best players are not playing like the best players, they are wildly inconsistent, they don't seem to want to play sound defensive hockey, they can't seem to play a full 60 minutes, they are incredibly streaky & they don't seem to have the heart or work ethic of winners. Pageau & Smith, two former 4th line players are now on our top line, that has to be a condemnation of our top stars Ryan, Hoffman & Zibanejad who have mailed it in it seems, in the last month or so when we needed them most.

Well having a coach that has the team playing a 1 2 2 neutral zone trap, with the one fore checker being passive, explains why the team lost last night's game and many others over the course of the season.

Allowing the opposition to exit their D-Zone with little resistance for a full period is just inviting a loss IMO.

Simple answer is better coaching and more experience.

Let's not forget that middway through the "rebuild" the Senators' #1 center asked for a trade.

When all other GMs know your #1 center asked for a trade, they have the better bargaining position, and the return was not commensurate with what the Senators sent to Dallas.

Ottawa received Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptill (who was dealt by the Ottawa Senators along with Cole Schneider, Eric O'Dell, and Michael Sdao to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Jason Akeson, Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, and Phil Varone.),Nick Paul and a second-round pick which they used to select Filip Chlapik (I think).


So I would not place the blame for the slow pace of the Rebuild on the GM, as this was NOT part of the plan, for the rebuild.

He has different rules for different players. How can you possibly have structure if certain players are allowed to play a certain way and others are not.

The use of Scott Gomez is a fantastic example of what is wrong with this team. He has been ok, however he has turned the puck over and made some soft plays that seemingly go unpunished.

Hoffman in the meantime makes the same mistake and is stapled to the bench. Despite clearly being the better NHL hockey player right now. (yeah he has struggled but no more than other players who consistently do not get benched for less).

Very poor special teams results especially when the team has obvious talent is a direct indication coaching is an issue. Same with posession stats.

Its not Cameron's fault really, he was never an NHL level head coach. His coaching track record at every level has been very average. The only reason he is here is Eugene Melnyk.

Bottom line the inconsistency issues start at the top with ownership. If he would stay out of the way and provide a GM with a bigger budget to hire an experienced coach there might be hope. An NHL coach that has a plan and can build a culture with structure and this team would be in a very different position.

The rebuild has been fine. Our core is pretty young.

The issue is we can't spend the extra money to surround them. So if we can get a decent system - we'll be a bubble playoff team.
