Who is the greatest devil ever?

really? Kovalchuk in his prime won the Richard trophy, he was inarguably a top 5 player for a long time, i'm having trouble ranking Patty that high amongst his peers.

There were times where Elias was arguably a top 5 player.

Kovalchuk was only a top 5 player once in 2003-04 and maybe another time in 2006-07.

Even the years he scored 50 goals, there were players who scored more and brought more to the table.

Elias was a better two-way player, better at using his linemates and played a better team game.

Kovalchuk probably won't get into the Hall of Fame but there is still a case for Elias.

Elias probably never had the shot or pure talent that Kovalchuk did, but I'd take some of those early 00s Elias's over anything Kovalchuk has ever done. Even the 08-09 and more recently the 11-12 Elias was not too far behind the Kovalchuk's of those seasons.

00-01 and 03-04 Elias was one of the best forwards in the league those years. He's still one of the most underrated players. He might go down as being one of the most underrated of all time.

There's people that actually think Shane Doan is better Elias, or has been better than Elias. That's one of the most ridiculous things ever. My god Shane Doan has to be one of the most overrated players of all time.

but i agree on patty- one of the most underrated players in the last 25 years imo

Top-3 most talented players ever to play for NJ: Fetisov, Jagr (pending) Niedermayer.

If you're doing that way, Stastny over Jagr.

Stastny didn't get over here until he was 24 years old missing some of his most productive scoring years and still put 1239 points in only 977 games...

Of the top 50 NHL scorers of all time, his Points Per Game is only lower than Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Marcel Dionne. (Mike Bossy had a better PPG but is currently ranked 53 all time in scoring.)

Maybe, possibly, the most underrated superstar ever.

Hm. Possibly, I hadn't really thought about Stastny, that's an oversight on my part.

I'm changing my answer - he's still to come.

It says EVER. I'm not ready to close the door on the future.

The Messiah has arrived. He is here...It is Schneider.

With our shot totals and Cory's save% he is going to be the greatest player that ever played the game. He is probably going to have a 1.25 Goals Against Average and 20 shutouts.

It's true.

true there is a case for Elias still, and i won't doubt that but i do think that Kovy would be a HOF'er if he didnt quit and if he played until he was 37 or so i'd even wager he'd be on the first ballot. I should've thought through my earlier post more, but i should have said talent-wise he was definitely a top 5 player. Dont get me wrong i love Elias, but i don't think his skill set ever really approached Kovalchuk's.

There's no way Stastny was as talented as Jagr. We're talking about a guy who was barely better than Dale Hawerchuk and Denis Savard and comparing him to a guy who won 5 Art Rosses, a couple of them by ROFLesque margins.

This might surprise you because of our run in on other boards, but well said. There are a lot of short memories here or (more likely) posters a lot younger than me if they think Kovalchuk was ever better than Elias was in 2000-01.

For sure, the 00-01 Elias was better than Kovalchuk. Maybe even better than any season Kovalchuk ever had. He was also a more complete player which is something we all love as Devils fans too right?

The 03-04 Elias was pretty scary too. The 05-06 Elias also pretty much rescued the team all by himself. We were below 500 when he came back, and went on a tear to win the division on the last day of the season.

The older Elias is also still pretty damn good. Finished 10th in points not even 2 years ago.

Remember Elias also played on teams that's main concept did not stress offense, and he was still producing at an elite level some of those years.

Shane Doan is not overrated. If he didn't play through 2 lockouts, he'd be challenging for 1000 points with literally no offensive help for 15 years. He's not better than Elias by any means, but just as we look at Elias as never really having a ton of offensive help in his career, Doan had even less.
