Who is the greatest Captain in Leafs history?

There seem to be three groups:

-people who look at the overall history tend to pick Apps, Kennedy, or Armstrong

-people who look at only players they've seen, and are old enough to remember the 60s, tend to pick Armstrong or Keon

-younger people who look at only players they've seen tend to pick Sittler, Gilmour, Clark, or Sundin.

Assuming you pick an actual Leaf captain, the only wrong answer is Phaneuf.
well, Ramage was pretty bad as well. I think it's a toss-up there. lol

Maybe the question should have been, Who is the greatest Leaf Captain you have ever seen. Then some of us could feel bad for the rest... LOL

Edit to add: I didn't consider Keon only because he never captained a cup winning team

But then Apps and Kennedy wouldn't get mentioned.

Uncle Wendel would be the best one that I can remember from my lifetime. My father would say Keon.

Hap Day, Kennedy, Apps or Armstrong are probably the best we've had but that's way back and in my lifetime it's without a doubt Sundin with Gilmour as a sure runner-up. I was a tad too young to really remember Sittler.

I was going to post something similar & I do remember Sittler.

The only Leafs captains in my lifetime who I have seen play is Clark, Gilmour, Sundin, Phaneuf, and Tavares.

So among them only my choice is Gilmour because when I was a kid he was my favorite player.

I can only go on the ones I've seen, so from 86 on...
1. Clark
2. Sundin
3. Vaive
4. Gilmour
5. Tavares
6. Rampage
7. Phaneuf

Phaneuf was a joke of a Captain, and he was chosen for the dumbest reason I've ever heard. Although, the team was one of the laughing stocks of the League at that point, so I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised.

In my lifetime I've seen Clark, Gilmour, Sundin, Phaneuf and Tavares as our captains.

Being biased I am going with Mats from this list and that will never change no matter who our future captains will be

Clark or Sunday. I just don't think Sudin gets as much respect as he deserves. He carried the Leafs for a very long time. He wasn't a banger like Clark or as aggressive as Gilmore, but he was a tough player who would take a beating and keep coming.

Conn Smythe, who was in a position to decide among the captains of the first half century of Leafs hockey, once said that Armstrong was the greatest captain. He was definitely not a great player himself. In his last few years his legs were almost gone and it was sometimes almost painful to watch him skate. He was, however a superlative leader. And quite good at hoisting the Cup!

I am not old enough to have seen Apps and though I may at least have seen Kennedy, I don’t remember him. My late father loved both of them, especially Apps. Apps was probably the best player ever to wear the C for the Leafs. He missed a couple of seasons in his prime in order to serve in WW II.
