Who gets the "C"

i want to give it to phillips, but spezza might walk soon, so give it to him,

i know if the only thing keeping spezza here is a c we should let him walk, well let me tell you guys something we CAN"t afford to let spezza or ryan walk. we gave up too much for him. Give Spezza the C, and Ryan the A, for the first time Ryan will feel he has a role on the team, Niel won't care about a letter, his role above that of a captain already.

I think Spezza expects the C and if he doesn't get it there will be trouble. The Sun argues that he is a leader in the room already so this is his chance to prove it and it seems like something he really wants . I think if he doesn't get it the Sens will risk losing another high end player .

Maclean always credited Alfie first for leadership and also Gonchar, Phillips and Neil. Phillips and Neil should have the A and will be there to help Spezza along. But I think they really have to give him the C and let him run with it.

You can't give the C to Philly or Neil. They can't lead the team when they're on the bench. Spezza. No question. Unless they want to skip a generation and award it to Karlsson, but there's no reason to do that.

I didn't even realize Spezza is 30!! Holy **** time goes fast. The more I think about it, the more I think Spezza should get it. I really want Karlsson to get the C and think he would do a fantastic job with it and he really should be the one to lead this new group... but with contract issues coming up I think Spezza might expect it since he has been with Ottawa for so long. Spezza is also a good leader and great player (without injuries of course), so he will also do a great job. If we give Spezza the "C" I'm sure he will resign since that will be a new chapter for him as well. If we don't, there is no guarantee as to what he will do. We would want to think he would sign, but we never know (like Alfy) what will happen. I would love for Spezza to retire as a Senator so give him the C for the next 6-10 years if we can hold onto him that long and when the time is right move it on to Karlsson.

It has to be Spezza.

I mean Phillips is retiring soon and hes not a top 4 dman anymore.
Unless Spezza doesnt want it, which would be a red flag, Karlsson is next in line.

It should be Spezza. It has to be Spezza. I am not sure it matters that much who is Captain anyway. Spezza will lead, and get excited and be like a little kid. I mean that in a really good way. Neil is the true on ice leader. He can change the tempo of a game with a hit or a fight or in drawing a penalty. He senses the momentum in games as well as anyone does. Phillips could have an A. But that I give to Karlsson.

If the team wanted to be inclusive to all of their more veteran players they could just rotate the A home and away, or even from month to month. Through Neil and Methot and Phillips and Karlsson... and after a month or two once Ryan is more accustomed to the team he could wear an A for a dozen games or something. Make him feel like an important veteran leader on a new team.

I seriously do not think any of the Sens would be offended if the A was handled in this way, or if Karlsson, Neil or Phillips get permanent A's. It is not a big deal. If Maclean could do something inclusive to really bring Ryan into the leadership group of the team.. without outright giving away an A to him when he is a stranger to the team at this point.

newbie question: how many A's can you acutally give out? is there a rule or is it more out of tradition to go with one captain and two alternates?

Fun fact.

In the Hockey Canada rulebook, it's actually supposed to be a two minute penalty if a team has a captain and more than two alternates. Never seen that enforced though and I know a lot of teams have a C and three A's.

Rumour was that Chara left because he wanted a C on his chest. He's definitely been undeserving of that C, what's he accomplished since then?

I've always said that if this was the issue, Alfredsson would have surely agreed to co-captaincy with Chára. Then again, I'm not so sure now...

All things considered, I'd have preferred to have kept Chára over Redden (I said it at the time, and it seems I was right), and if it would have been a question of Chára or Alfredsson, I'm sure I would still have chosen Chára. The argument in favour of keeping Redden over Chára was largely based on nonsense about 'well, in the new NHL...' In the new NHL, what? A giant, dominant, elite defenceman won't be effective because he's too big and too physical? I didn't believe that then (and I was in the slight minority), and I don't believe it now (and am in the overwhelming majority).

No. I'm in the 'Chára wanted out because of the ****** way we treated Hossa' camp. We're almost Tampa Bay bad with Slovaks. :madfire:

John Muckler was a knob, and at the end of the day it's not Alfredsson who will lead us to the promise land - it's the competent management team that gets us guys like Bobby Ryan, Robin Lehner, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

As an outsider, I would think Karlsson should be your captain. If nothing else for marketing reasons.

Also, if Spezza leaves because he didn't get a letter on his chest, should he really have it?

If a 10 year old veteran that happens to be your best player does not get the C, what's keeping him him?

I really don't see any other option other than Spezza. Anybody else would be a slap in the face to your franchise centreman.

If Alfie lasted lets say two more years, you know who I'd like to see as the Captain (if Spezza re-signed)?

Methot.

To me he screams NHL captain, but it's unrealistic considering Spezza.

Phillips, the Ottawa Senators reward/appreciate loyalty.

Let him retire his jersey with a 'C' on it.

C'mon guys.

The organization has been spoon-feeding us hints over the past 3 years that Spezza is the heir to the C. They've even done self-produced video pieces on how they expect Spezza to take over after Alfie leaves.

It's Spezza.
