To explain the numbers, using Anaheim, there were 29 players originally drafted or signed by the Ducks (2 goaltenders, 13 dmen and 14 forwards). Those players combined last season for 200 NHL goals and 608 points. The breakdown of those goals and points are 50/250 for dmen and 150/357 for forwards.

Note: both drafted and originally signed undrafted players included, goaltender assists also included in team point totals. Stats based on the 2018-19 regular NHL season.

It would be interesting to see who has the best production per player. A team with McDavid and Draisaitl is obviously going to have insane point production but Im not sure its really representative as Mcdavid was a no-brainer and Draisaitl too.

This doesn't give much weight to defenseman/goaltenders either. Games played would've been a great indicator
maybe a save percentage average too ?

Anyhow, great work for the rest.

@Mrb1p there are probably 1,001 ways to expand on or view the numbers, they would all have their plusses and minuses.

This is a just a simple way of tracing the rosters back to the original signing team, with point totals added in. A comprehensive look would have a more complete breakdown. Could be done if someone had the time and inclination to set up the database and spreadsheets.

I do the work by hand, without spreadsheets or databases, so I've probably taken this as far as I will. I start in the summer working with projected rosters and finalize the numbers when the opening rosters are set. Would be willing to give advice to anyone wanting to take it further.

I just laid it out there if someone ever wanted to work on it a bit. Its still good work.

Even though he has done nothing.

Does Sam gagner for the oilers count as home grown he was drafted by the Oilers
I would have counted him as an Oiler, yes. He`s not included above because he wasn`t on the opening roster, was sent to the AHL to start the season.

To explain the numbers, using Anaheim, there were 29 players originally drafted or signed by the Ducks (2 goaltenders, 13 dmen and 14 forwards). Those players combined last season for 200 NHL goals and 608 points. Th breakdown of those goals and points are 50/250 for dmen and 150/357 for forwards.

Note: both drafted and originally signed undrafted players included, goaltender assists also included in team point totals

This is brilliant, great job thank you. Explains a lot.

Is there a reason Drake Caggiula isn't listed? Oilers tried to sign Stecher but only scored Caggiula that offseason.

Tried pasting it into excel to get some nice sorting options, but it will just paste it all into a single cell. Did you by any chance make the first list in excel and still have it? :)

Which version of Excel are you running?

I just tried this (highlight the full table, CTRL-C copy, then highlight a cell in Excel and straight up CTRL-V paste with no other options) and it worked great.

Missed him, corrections made above. Thanks!

Edit: I did have him correctly in the initial table (post 1)

I don't have Excel, I did initially use a spreadsheet and tried to copy/paste here without success.

If anyone is able to do that, by all means please add here if you can.

Same idea as the first post table, this table represents everyone who played in a game this season in the NHL, traced back to their original drafting/signing team...

I realize this is premature because no official announcement on how the rest of the regular season will be played (although there are rumours they would like to complete the season in some form). Have the numbers prepared so thought I would post them.

Surprised to see SJ has the most forwards drafted. Kind of funny that our forward group kind of sucks.

Alot of those are undrafted free agents. I could have added a column for that, didn`t believe there was room.

Undrafted free agents included in the Post 17 totals who played in 2019-20 by original signing team (i.e. Artemi Panarin was originally signed by the Hawks, Sergei Bobrosky by the Flyers, etc.):

Ah, that makes sense. The Sharks do sign a ton of undrafted players.

Traced back the 745 players (by my count) who have played in an NHL game so far this season to their original drafting/signing team. (including games of January 28, 2021). Plan to redo this at season's end adding stats.

To explain the numbers using Anaheim:

27 players they originally drafted or signed have played across the NHL this season

2 goaltenders, 10 dmen and 15 forwards.

Of the 27 players 1 was originally signed as an undrafted free agent the rest were Ducks draft picks.

The fact that San Jose is ranked "top" in this table means that this metric doesn't really mean what it tries to mean...
