Who else has very little interest in the Four Nations tournament?

I'll say it, this is borderline exhibition hockey to me. The 2026 Olympics will be a blast. I can't wait. I don't like the idea of Russia not playing in it as it takes away what could be such great hockey, and it penalizes a lot of players that have nothing to do with anything going on in the world. Too many great players in the NHL on Russia not being able to showcase their talent or play for their country either in the 4 Nations in 2025 or possibly even the Olympics. Not good. So that alone makes it less competitive for me and I for one have never liked boycotting and not allowing a country to compete in things like this.

Secondly, how much of an exhibition-like feel will this have? Is McDavid going to go full out for this tournament? Will Makar and MacKinnon play hard against Rantanen two days after playing together in Colorado? I think there is more to lose with the Olympics but my thought is that this won't be the competitive tournament in 2025 that some might think it will be. The Olympics is the Olympics. Mario and Yzerman certainly cost themselves a bit healthwise by playing in 2002. But it was worth it. Would anyone do this in 2025?

Why does the most anticipated game of this tournament have to start with a series of staged fights is beyond my understanding. If they felt they had to fight right from the start, they could have sorted it out in the corridors or somewhere, ffs. This is "fun" on a WWE level.
Can you define ”staged”?

You aren’t going to find many people on your side with this one. That was all emotion. The Nothing felt “staged”. I feel bad that you couldn’t enjoy that intensity.

I almost had to go watch the game in the basement when my wife started in with this same diatribe last night.

Stop asking questions and just enjoy it.

Bread and circus. Imagine being some average American and after watching NBA and that Super Bowl half-time stuff you tune in to watch USA vs Canada. Canadian fans booing to US national anthem and then seeing that intensity and fighting.

I mean can there really be any better promotion to hockey?

The only thing that will unite Americans is when someone else tells us how to behave. I'd give it 50/50 that the American crowd Boos Canada in response once in Boston it'd be higher most other places. Regardless, Every compelling story needs a villain, Canada has chosen theirs. Hockey is at its best when there are hero's and villains, now we just need the Russian and Euro team and we can actually get legit heat going between the teams that can make this a tournament people care about for years.
Canadians didn't chose the United States, the United States volunteered

The Tkachuks and JT Miller pre planned the whole thing in advance

Sure. Fights are the outcome of the game. Hockey, like other sports, is emotional, and it's fine if, during a game, a fight breaks out. But having to watch a fight BEFORE a game begins? You mean the players were completely fine and civilized during the opening ceremonies, but suddenly they feel the urge to fight? What is next, waiting for a commercial break to be over, and then starting to fight? I don't think that's how emotions work in real life. Actually, I am fairly sure.

It would make some sense, if this was a carry-over from an earlier match, a revenge for a previous game - but this American team and this Canadian team have literally never met before.

That's what I mean by staged. Staged and artificial. But I mean - have it your way. I'm well aware (like another poster observed) that I am in the minority here.

Do you really think they'll actually remain fans and watch the reason of the season, though? All I see is a bunch of people on Twitter acting like hockey is the greatest thing in the world all of a sudden because they feel insulted because some people booed their anthem and they can't understand why. As soon as the tournament is over most of them will go back to whining about something political and hockey will be irrelevant to them again, especially if the US loses on Thursday. When you see Republicans commenting on the game it feels super 'fashionable' and not something that will stick with most of them.

The league and owners 100% hated what happened on Saturday night.

These games have been outstanding so far. Dare I say the NHL actually made a good decision?

They actually did make a good call. The only thing better would be a World Cup with all teams playing. Or even a Summit Series with Canada/USA in the fall or something. That would be sweet. I have totally changed my mind - and I was hoping I would - about the 4 Nations. It is a great set up. Three fights in 9 seconds to open up a game. The players care, and the fans care. Wow.

In Finland, it doesn't seem like people even know that this is going on. Generates about the same amount of interest as some random beer league tournament.

Doesn't help that the games are being played at midnight.
Strange, in Sweden its talked about a lot, and is headline news in all major papers and TV stations, every credible mainstream media has their own staff in place, its all over the place.
