Who are your 5th -10th best players ever?

I suppose you're right on McDavid coming out on top of Morenz, Shore, Richard, and Beliveau, even if we were to generously retroactively grant the Hart, Lindsay, and Art Ross.

Maybe. But then you're moving someone else out. I have Crosby, McDavid, Jagr, Hasek, Roy, and Hull ahead of him. I'm also probably snubbing Beliveau, Lidstrom, Bourque, Harvey, Shore, Richard, and many others besides Ovechkin.

Being #1 in goal scoring is amazing but Brett Hull and Marcel Dionne are top 10 all time goal scorers and don't belong anywhere near the top 10 all time player list. You also have to factor overall skills, team success, trophies, etc.

Phil Housley put up a lot of points as a D man too. Bourque was great, but leading a club to Cups (imo) is a factor when tiring the greatest of the great.

Phil Housley doesn't even deserve to lick Bourque's shoes clean though. He was a tire fire defensively his whole career while Bourque was dominant everywhere and no amount of failure on Boston's management end will change that.

Bourque was one of the greatest. McDavid is one of the greatest. Imo the greatest are all super close in ranking. And really the only way to determine where they fall within a tier is by leading their club to Cups. So Bourque and McDavid are in the group of all time greats but ranked lower because of their failure to lead clubs to a Cup. Dionne put up huge numbers. Housley too. Imo greatness is more than points.

Bourque winning a Cup at age 40 during his first and final full season outside Boston should clue us in that playing for stacked teams is an enormous advantage, and that context and a little more nuance is needed when ranking some players compared to others.

It is very hard for an elite d man to lead thrir teams to cups like elite centers or forwards. Bourque not winning on his own merit is a testiment to that. Him not winning in boston is much worse than say mcdavid never winning in edmonton

I'm usually critical of people, be it media or History of Hockey board here, going too over the top on the old-timers and thinking that 60% of the top 30 players of all time were all born prior to 1945, but these lists go entirely too far in the other direction.

I had to check and double check that this thread wasn't the best players since 1990.

Lidstrom on like 80% of the lists but barely a mention of Bobby Hull or Beliveau or Richard? Messier, Yzerman, and Sakic also don't belong in top 10 discussion.

My 5-10 is:

5) McDavid
6) Crosby
7) Beliveau
8) Bobby Hull
9) Hasek
10) Jagr

With Harvey, Bourque, Roy, and Richard in the convo.
