Who are the top 10 busts since 2000?

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.

I have Dylan Strome has a bigger bust than Galchenyuk not because Galchenyuk is a better player but because of the players selected below him.

2. Griffin Reinhart
3. Michael Dal Colle
4. Rick DiPietro
5. Ryan Murray
6. Erik Gustafsson
7. Cam Barker.
8. Alex Galchenyuk
9. Quinton Byfield
10. Alexis Lafreniere

Note: Didn't include any russians outside of Yakupov because I feel like it was mostly bad transistion to the NHL. Yakupov, meanwhile, is struggling in the KHL, also.

Yakupov wasn’t even the biggest bust in his draft.

Here’s my top 10:

1. Scott Glennie (2009, 8th overall; 1 GP)
2. Brent Krahn (2000, 9th overall; 1 GP)
3. Petr Taticek (2002, 9th overall; 3 GP)
4. Lars Jonsson (2000, 7th overall; 8 GP)
5. Griffin Reinhart (2012, 4th overall; 37 GP)
6. Zach Hamill (2007, 8th overall; 20 GP)
7. Olli Juolevi (2016, 5th overall; 41 GP)
8. Nikita Filatov (2008, 6th overall; 53 GP)
9. Alexandre Picard (2004, 8th overall; 67 GP)
10. Alexander Svitov (2001, 3rd overall; 179 GP)

That's not busting that's bad drafting by GMs
Which is part of the equation.

If the draft is shit and you select shit 1st overall, it sucks but it is not bad BUT if the draft is amazing and you select shit. Then it is awful!

Quite like why Hugh Jessiman was a huge bust even though he was selected 12th overall.

Yakupov wasn’t even the biggest bust in his draft.

Here’s my top 10:

1. Scott Glennie (2009, 8th overall; 1 GP)
2. Brent Krahn (2000, 9th overall; 1 GP)
3. Petr Taticek (2002, 9th overall; 3 GP)
4. Lars Jonsson (2000, 7th overall; 8 GP)
5. Griffin Reinhart (2012, 4th overall; 37 GP)
6. Zach Hamill (2007, 8th overall; 20 GP)
7. Olli Juolevi (2016, 5th overall; 41 GP)
8. Nikita Filatov (2008, 6th overall; 53 GP)
9. Alexandre Picard (2004, 8th overall; 67 GP)
10. Alexander Svitov (2001, 3rd overall; 179 GP)
That's a better list.

Without putting too much effort or research into it:
2003: Nikolai Zherdev
2004: Cam Barker
2005: Gilbert Brule
2006: Peter Mueller but also Erik Johnson (solid career but very underwhelming 1oa)
2007: Zach Hamill....who?
2008: Nikita Filatov (CBJ and russians ooooof)
2009: Scott Glennie
2010: Brandon Gormley
2011: Duncan Siemens or Ryan Murphy
2012: Nail Yakupov (the entire top 4 ended up being a big LOL)
2013: Jonathan Drouin
2014: Jake Virtanen
2015: Jakub Zboril + Zach Senyshyn (WTG Bruins)
2016: Olli Juolevi
2017: Lias Andersson (Unfair to have Nolan Patrick here, health issues weren't his fault)
2018: Vitali Kravtsov (A few other contenders here)
2019: Alex Turcotte (Still early but not even a consistent AHL producer)
2020-2022: Too early to say

Kaut may join this illustrious group soon (don't blame Avs for this)

Zboril is hanging by a thread! He may be full time on a very strong D corps next season as B's are cap strapped.

Hoping a trade saves Zadina (don't really blame Detroit on his development though)
