I nominate Matthew Tkachuk.

This was one of my favorite hits in recent memory

Somehow I knew some joker would bring this up, but that’s just physics. Don’t really think it’s indicative of strength, just like 0 pull-up Bennett absolutely destroyed Slavin.

Don’t get me wrong, fantastic hit

Dustin Byfuglien was special. When he played, it was easily him. I miss watching big buff manhandle 2-3 players at once in scrums.
I remember him in a couple of playoff series doing that to the Preds and when a guy would try to break free they'd stumble to the ground with Buff still holding on. Hated him because of it but I do miss seeing him on the ice.

There were a lot of guys in the Dead Puck Era who could hold onto the puck in traffic while taking major abuse physically - Sundin, Jagr and Forsberg come to mind. Yashin was really built as well.

These days, obviously Crosby stands out for being strong on the puck. MacKinnon seems like a powerful guy and is, of course, a fitness freak. Guys like Kopitar and Barkov are quite muscular.

As far as raw athletic prowess, I don't think any current player tops Brandon Montour. He played like 58 minutes in the Panthers 4OT game against Carolina in the 2023 ECF and he looked like he was just getting warmed up when it ended. Unreal core strength. Absolute freak of nature.

I also think being able to shield the puck is maybe the best example of functional strength in hockey. Being able to do stuff while defenders are grabbing, hitting, holding you, that's impressive. I think Malkin is as good as anyone I've seen (active players) at this, and Barkov is probably second.

Even at his age, Jordan Staal has to be up there. Guys is an absolute horse and almost impossible to get off the puck. He consistently comes to cap in the best shape of anyone. Barkov and Wilson are two that come to mind as well.

He also was a even match for Shea Weber when he was like 21 years old.

The vid shows him get pushed around easily by Weber before the fight.

Tkachuk is a courageous dude I give you that and he indeed fights Weber in the video (after somehow jumping him though). But he was usually fairly quiet when Weber was around.

Xhekaj has the same effect on him nowadays.

No shame on him, I don’t expect my young talented captain to be able to scrap with the toughest dudes in the league. But the thread title is strongest player
