Who are the best hockey nations in the world overall right now?

Switzerland has 429 pts. Don't think they were ever so close to CZE. And I honestly think they never will be as close again. ;)

Your top 5 is ridiculous.... Even has an elite D, C and W's.

Sweden above Finland and Russia is a suprise for me. I think much is thanks to all the offensive dman that Sweden have.
Its probably due to Sweden having nearly twice as many players. Honestly I found it more surprising that Finland hadn’t surpassed Russia.

1.Latvia
2.Finland
3.Canada
4.Denmark
5.Slovakia

Can someone guess what criteria I used to determine top hockey NATIONS?

Well this is a mix of roster strengths best on best + success on any kind of rosters in World Hockey Championship tournaments for example.

1. Canada
2. Finland
3-4. Sweden & USA
5. Czech
6. Switzerland
7. Slovakia
8. Germany
9-10. Denmark & Latvia

Don't want to list any ROCks. They can't play in some years so doesn't matter anyways.

Well Sweden lost to Latvia. I wonder when people will wake up about Sweden. The upcoming Swedish generation is not top 10 in the world.

1. Finland
2. Canada
3. Sweden
4. USA
5. Russia
6. Czechia
7. Switzerland
8. Slovakia
9. Germany
10. Denmark

Mix of my personal sympathies and subjective criteria for me like "hockey nation", "right now", also bear in mind tradition, domestic league, quality of talents and results in recent decade at senior or youth international level. So obviously very variable.

This is based on how these countries have done in past (lets say) five tournaments. USA has a lot of great players and they are powerhouse at U-18 and U-20-levels but since they haven´t shown anything at mens level for decades, I drop them to 5th.(the place almost everyone puts us in) I still respect american hockey and wish them success.

CANADA
USA
Finland
Sweden
Czechia
Germany
Switzerland.
Denmark

These are the TOP 8 that should be included in the 2024 World Cup of Hockey. 8 team tourney is fine by me.

What has the US won at the senior level to be unquestionably the best?

Canada's won 3 best on bests in a row so no argument about that one.
I think he means the top 2 are the Canada and the U.S with the U.S being 2. In terms of quality of players and depth of those players along with youth competition results they are 2 I'd say. As you said though, no big senior wins yet ,it remains a thorn in their side they have not been able to remove yet. However, that is coming very soon I'd say. They are in the same boat as Finland in that regard somewhat. In the U.S situation, they can't buy a win at the senior level at either best on best or at the lesser WHC. In Finlands case they are a force at the lesser WHC but need that best on best win.

They are both on the hunt for it hard though and they can't be kept out forever.

Only 15 of this year’s top-50 NHL scorers are Canadian, and of those 15, only nine will be under 30 next season. Last year it was 19/50.

Think 2021-22 had the lowest number of Canadian top-50 scorers in NHL history.

Usually its was between 22-25 Canadians in the post-lockout era and 30-35 in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

Thirteen of the top 50 were American (four will be over 30 next season). Eight of the 16 top goal scorers also were American.

These things ebb and flow from year to year but there is a denial about the trend that Canadian hockey has been going in based on the quality of players produced. All it will take is losing one best on best tournament and things will swing in the other direction, probably too far. Canada could still produce the strongest A team and has the best depth, but not to the degree that existed in recent history.

The USA has had a good production of players since the middle of the last decade, which has meant (in my opinion at least) they have passed Russia and the Nordic countries in terms of player development, but until they can win something (best on best and to a lesser extent WHC) at senior level it’s pretty meaningless; and they still have a decent way to go until they surpass Canadian player development/depth. Though I would agree Canada has regressed slightly from the early 2010s where a Team Ontario or Team Canada B would have been the second strongest team at most tournaments to echo what @JackSlater said

Not trolling. How are Karlsson, Hedman, Dahlin, OEL etc better in their own zone than Gudas, Hronek, Rutta etc?
If you're not trolling you're lost. OEL ain't making team Sweden and Hedman is the best all around D man in the world. Hronek over Karlsson?... Yikes.

There are 5 high end countries capable of winning a true best on best. Based on actual rosters it looks like this. Then the Czechs are in a secondary tier alone then there are 3 more teams capable of competing but not winning anything significant.

1. Canada
2. USA
3. Sweden
4. Finland
5. Russia

6.Czechia

7. Switzerland
8. Germany
9. Slovakia

Its always funny how people overestimate the USA team. They have a lot of quality players yes, but the fact is that they haven´t achieved anything for decades. Period. So placing them as a second is just laughable. They should be placed as fifth.
There hasn't been a true best on best for 8 years. None of these other tournaments mean anything when actually evaluating the best hockey country. They are quite clearly 2 and actually the only country that can debatably be better than Canada if this was played in true best of 7 fashion.

As much as a true best on best tournament would be great I'd rather see USA Canada play an 8 game series.

Imho, don’t think Russia would be able to win a true best on best. Their offense is great but they just don’t have the defensemen.

In reality Canada and USA would be massive favourites. Chances of anyone else winning a true best on best is less than 20% imo.
