Harris, Struble are the odd man out right now every other LD are either younger, better or bring something special (Xhekaj size, Hutson offense).
Engstrom might the the other guy he might that could push Harris and Strubble out…
If Barron or Mailloux don’t develop they also might be battling for the same spot so one of them could be made available.

Mailloux & Strubble

I think they have the kind of physical tools that if they have even decent AHlL season next year, some GM/team will overvalue them and offer up the kind of return Hughes jumps at.

For fun I decided to take a look at hockey deals in the cap era of teams who cashed in a surplus of assets where they traded a defenseman from a position of strength.

Here is what I found:
Johansen for S. Jones
Henri Jokiharju for Alex Nylander
Tyson Barrie + for Nazem Kadri +
Olli Maatta for Kahun + pick
Gudbransson for Pearson
Daniel Sprong for M. Pettersson
Hall
for Larsson
Adam Henrique for Sami Vatanen
Erik Gudbransson + for McCann +
JVR for Schenn
Carter for J. Johnson + 1st
R. Whitney for Kunitz + Tangradi
Bear for Foegele
Fiala for Faber + 1st

Plus for picks:
Skjei for 1st
G. Reinhart for 1st + 2nd

Doing a quick count before my GF loses patience since I've been spending 15 mins on this:
In 14 of those trades for players, I'd say the team getting the forward back won the trade 9 of those times. I have faith that this management can work its magic and strike when the iron is hot just like they did with Romanov.

As you can see it's pretty rare that these deals occur, don't know if it's because even executives and people paid to do this have trouble valuing two such different positions. I'd be very curious as to what Harris would get back, I imagine his value would be maximized in package vs solo.

Adam. E probably stays. Talked to some guys at red and white today. Said he second best player on ice behind only Hutson. That's including Mailloux and Rainbacher

I vote for Wifi and Harris combined. There's no realy need to keep him them around so far on the future with a top like Hutson-Guhle-Reinbacher and Mailloux. Wifi and Harris are actual NHL legit players and would help anytime in any context. They will interest more clubs and attract more bids. They could actually land more what the club needed, which is a realy young Gem on potential but still not proven on NHL, which has a little bit less value (Someone like Jack Quinn for a club like Buffalo) by adding a bit, after all they are the club who draft Kassian back in time. So maybe administration would like to overpay a bit. Not telling they would do it, but thats the kind of trade we should gun for

Personally I wouldn’t have traded that much for Newhook. Maybe the first that’s it. I think Harris can get a mid range prospect and a first or 2 seconds because of his position and age

I think the price for Newhook was fair but that depends on what he does in the future which is guess work. I was a huge fan pre draft but so far, he's tracking middle 6F type. Can he improve still and be a top 6F? Yes. If that happens, the price is more than fair for a player his age.

Harris does seem like the odd man out when the younger guys on D make it but we will see about that. That's a discussion for a later date with me. If there is a larger trade we get into over the next year or so, then maybe he is part of the package as a add on.

Harris seems like the obvious candidate

Crowded left handed room and there’s multiple players who seem to have more potential than him in multiple ways (either bigger size, more physical or better offensively).

Not to take anything away from him, because he seems like a very solid NHLer, it’s just if you have Guhle/Hutson as your potential future LD1/2 and Engstrom as a backup plan, then Xhekaj and Struble fighting for that LD3 bruiser down the road, I’m not sure where he’d fit in long term
7th D / injury fill-in and seems like a fantastic locker room guy to have.

Guhle,Engstrom,Reinbacher,Hutson and Mailloux should go nowhere

Xhekaj i would keep because hes physical and tough brings something we lack

Barron i would also keep because we're thin on the right

Harris and Struble are meh and dont see them having a future here

I watched Jayden Struble play every AHL game down the stretch last season, the kid has great upside and is a physical beast. Patience

A few people are misunderstanding my intentions with this poll.

I definitely wouldn't trade any of them just yet (that's why Savard, Wideman and to a lesser extent Kovacevic are around, let the young guys develop). This is more a thread to look back on in a few years and see how projections panned out and which young dman over/underdeveloped and whether us fans and the management team gauged things correctly.

Too many promising DMen is a good problem to have!

Harris isn't going anywhere. He's our chameleon who will be able to slot in any position/role when injuries happen. We need a 3rd pairing guy with high IQ and positioning and he fits that very well.

So, you wouldn't have traded so much for Newhook, but somehow you would have extorted another GM to give you a Toffoli-type package for Harris?

I think Mailloux is going to surprise. I feel like he’s got a sneaky good shot and good skills with the puck on his stick. People are sleeping on him. He scored a Michigan goal (as a hat trick goal no less) this season. I’m excited to see how he does in the AHL.

I don’t think there is any rush to trade any of them this year, especially with how injury prone this roster has proven to be.

Harris and Struble are my votes though. Harris is good but the most logical trade chip to be packaged. Guhle has shown he has the most potential out of the current group already on the team and Arber.. well.. you just can’t trade a guy like that. Teammates love him, fans love him. Unless his development suddenly goes south and he’s a liability on the ice, he should stay over Harris imo.

Hutson, Reinbacher are a couple years away a shouldn’t be in this conversation at all. Let Engstrom develop and maybe get some games if injuries pile up.

Harris reminds me a ton of Josh Gorges, with maybe a smidge more offensive abilities. That's not a bad thing, Gorges was solid despite not being flashy at all.

Having said that, I voted Harris and Struble.

Guhle/Reinbacher/Hutson/Mailloux/Engstrom/Barron/Xhekaj is going to be a lethal top 6+ in a few years.

not saying trade him right now… we don’t need to make any move right now.

The odd man out will like be Struble or Harris, maybe Struble make Harris expandable first but I don’t see moving Ghule, Xhekaj and Hutson moving and even Engstrom is look very good. If they can’t make it At RD and have trade value someone will be traded.
