Younger fans would only know the second group, whereas older fans know both.

So the second group just because of ages of fans.

Average NHL fan today for sure the contemporary players, but overall Howe, Jágr, Lemieux are more famous. Although I suppose Ovechkin has become more notorious of late.

I'm pretty sure Ovechkin, Crosby and McDavid are familiar names to more people. Ovechkin is a household name in Russia. Virtually everyone in Russia knows who he is.

The superstars who are currently playing in the NHL, I mean that’s just how it goes.

With that being said, huge amount of respect for the late Gordie Howe and retired Lemieux, Jagr

A casual sports fan has absolutely no clue about Howe, Lemieux etc.

It’s like myself and baseball. I know Babe Ruth but so do other casual fans with Gretzky, but I wouldn’t be able to name any other baseball greats of the past.

It's probably close to even.

Hockey fans in general would likely know both the current stars and the past stars.

Ty Cobb?
Mickey Mantle?

I'm sure you know more than you think.

Never heard of them. Think you’re overestimating the knowledge of a casual. Ovechkin Crosby mcdavid by far. Mostly due to the brilliant marketing of Ovechkin Crosby. My sisters and girlfriend who like hockey know of these three but I’d bet my house 3/4 wouldn’t recognize the other names

I would say also Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds etc. are far, far more famous than Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts, Ronald Acuña or whomever the current three best are. Ohtani is the only current player that might find himself in that category.
