Nobody understood the anxiety of having Benning as a GM.

Like stomach ulcers you got so nervous when a Vancouver trade was announced and they hadn’t announced what Vancouver gave up cause you knew it was going to be massive

Vancouver could have been decent if he didn’t enter free agency or the trade market.

Like he just folded like a cheap suit every time it required him to have the slightest bit of patience

Watching Kakko and Vilardi pop off tonight, what teams would be better if your team's GM simply did nothing in the past few years? What would your team's lineup be?
Vilardi has been good since he was with the Kings though. He's found a perfect role in WPG though, and it's cool to see him healthy and excelling.

Chiarelli's Oilers 100%

Traded Matt Barzal pick for Griffin Reinhart
Signed Lucic to the $6m/7 year contract
Signed Koskinen $4.5m/3 years after a quarter of a season
Trading away Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome
Trading away Ryan Strome for Ryan Spooner
Trading for Brandon Manning within a year of Manning injuring McDavid

Oilers twitter could have literally made polls for all these transactions at the time and would have ended up in a better position by fan vote

Bit too early in Brière's run for this to be an interesting thought experiment unwinding only his actions, so what happens if we freeze the Flyers before Chuck Fletcher's Reign of Error? The game before he was put in charge, this is what Hextall iced:

Flyers pre-Fletcher

Giroux-Couturier-Konecny
Voracek-Patrick-Simmonds
Raffl-Laughton-van Riemsdyk
Lindblom-Lehterä-Weise
Goulbourne

Sanheim-Provorov
Gostisbehere-Gudas
Hägg-MacDonald
Folin

Stolarz
Neuvirth

Now, we have a lot of people there who have retired since 12/1/18, that's a long time to hold over a roster. I'm removing anyone who didn't play at least one NHL game in 23-24 or 24-25. However, there are some Phantoms from then we can call up, and some picks we can fill in with. To keep this as frozen in amber as possible, I'm only adding then-current players from the organization like Frost, players drafted with picks Hextall had acquired like Farabee, or picks that are original Flyer property like Foerster. No players drafted with picks acquired by Fletcher through trades (bye-bye, York and Brink), no players drafted by DB (no Michkov).

Giroux-Couturier-Konecny
Farabee-Frost-Foerster
Lindblom-Laughton-van Riemsdyk
Aubé-Kubel-Cates-Lycksell

Sanheim-Provorov
Gostisbehere-Gudas
Hägg-Andrae
Ginning

Stolarz
Lyon

Setting aside the Michkov-shaped hole in our future there, that's probably a more competitive team than we're icing now, and it doesn't include most of the players I don't enjoy seeing on the ice, which is another nice benefit. Also, that goalie glow-up is substantial. Both of those guys, and Talbot, were part of the Year of Eight Goalies, any of whom I would trust more than any of our current goalies.

Kings if they didn't freak out and think they were contending after the first Oilers loss...they blew it. That was the season they made the playoffs because they played a bunch of kids in prominent roles, including Durzi and Spence taking over for Doughty, etc, but then misread that as "our vets are great and we need to supplement them, window is open!" and have gone backwards since (until finally having to play the remaining kids this year after being backed into a corner and purging all their assets). This would be the roster if they didn't shoot themselves in the face after that year:

Vilardi-Kopitar-Kempe
Turcotte-Byfield-Laferriere
Moore-Danault-Foegele
Iafallo-Thomas-Kupari
Helenius, Kaliyev, etc

Anderson-Doughty
Gavrikov-Faber
Moverare (Edmundson?)-Clarke
Roy, Durzi, Spence, Grans, Roy, Walker and whatever assets they become

Not to mention several additional high picks

But instead they blew their wads on the debacles with Petersen and PLD and some would argue Fiala. So just in three-ish short years, you have
-Choosing Petersen in favor of Quick, Kuemper, Campbell or anyone else and locking him to a poisonous contract;
-Subsequent Petersen trade, only to pick up PLD;
-Trading PLD BACK FOR KUEMPER;
-The trade for and handling of Kevin Fiala.

The trade tree starting with the Petersen mistake:

Outgoing
Vilardi
Iafallo
Kupari
MTL 2nd
Durzi
Walker
Grans
Petersen
LA 2nd
PLD

Incoming
2 million+ of Provorov's salary
Hayden Hodgson
Kevin Connauton

AND Kuemper the goalie you traded to start the cycle above

TLDR Blake could have gone on vacation for the last three years and gotten better results

Skipping the Lou years would have been big. No 1st + 2nd for Andersen, probably finish in the lottery again and have a shot at Makar/Heiskanen instead of Liljegren, no Marleau, no 8 year Zaitsev deal, no 2nd round picks to rent 4th liners on the verge of retirement, sign each of the core forwards a year earlier and cheaper instead of waiting until the last second. The only thing I’d want the replacement potato to actively do is beat Tampa’s bid on McDonagh + Miller.

They should have been slow playing it and drafting top 10 + 2 or 3 extra top 90 picks another year or two at least.

That team would be a legit contender.

Is the one where they just draft the forward or defenseman with the most points versus the actual picks, and just sorting by points is almost always best?

Thats a different, equally great article.

The one Im thinking about involves trades, contract extensions, etc. Basically the potato can do nothing, and ends up in a much stronger position when the off-season ends.

JFC… I think we have a winner. This is infuriating and heartbreaking to read, and Im not even a fan of the team.

Might be a middle of the pack one but the Penguins might look different if Hextall didn't trade Matheson and Marino and for Petry, Smith, and a 3rd and then signing Rutta and trading for Granlund. It really sucked the mobility and youth from the team. This caused Dubas to make the larger Karlsson trade which meant giving up a 1st which turned into Sam Dickenson.

We probably would have been better off with Pettersson-Letang, Marino-Matheson as a core d-core today than what we have. So if he had stopped after the Rakell trade, I think the Penguins would likely be better off.

Or was it this? Dave Nonis v Potato

That's the one. This opening line makes me legitimately laugh out loud, every time:

Colton Orr: Dave Nonis chose to re-sign the facepuncher at 925k for two years. The potato could not, and Orr walks as a UFA. Strong opener by the potato.
