Which teams are bound for mediocrity over the next 5-6 years?

Impossible to predict.

6 years ago, every team that was in the final four this year missed the playoffs, and half of the division winners of that year missed the playoffs this year.

If I had to guess, Pittsburgh post Crosby-Geno will be bad for a while?
I think the point is that the post-Crosby Pens are likely to be so bad that they're rebuilding and much worse than mediocre. I think what we're talking about in the thread is the teams that are consistently in the 10-16th OA and are the "consistent play-off bubble team without a chance of winning a P/O round".

5-6 years is a long time...

You can basically take all of the top contenders right now, and I'd bet every one of them is mediocre or worse in 5 years time.

Just look at the ages of all the core guys on the best teams around in 5 years:

McDavid: 27-->32
Draisaitl: 28-->33(34 in October)
RNH: 31-->36
Hyman: 32-->37
Bouchard: 24-->29(30 In October)

Barkov: 28-->33(34 In September)
Tkachuk: 26-->31(32 In December)
Reinhart: 28-->33(34 in November)
Forsling: 28-->33
Verhaeghe: 28-->33(34 in August)

Mackinnon: 28-->33(34 in September)
Rantanen: 27-->32(33 in October)
Makar: 25-->30(31 in October)
Toews: 30-->35
Landeskog: 31-->36(37 in November)

Panarin: 32-->37(38 in October)
Kreider: 33--38
Trocheck: 31-->36
Fox: 26-->31
Zibanejad: 31-->36

Eichel: 27-->32(33 in October)
Stone: 32-->37
Hertl: 30-->35(36 in Novemer)
Hanifin: 27-->32
Theodore: 28-->33(34 in Novemer)

Basically all of the contenders right now will be very old. They'll all have regressed to varying degrees and will very likely be holding onto the hope of playoff hockey with very little expectation for success beyond a first round appearance. Just look at the Caps, Penguins, hell even Tampa Bay at this point.

5-6 years is a very long time and it's pretty unlikely any of the current best teams are still anywhere near the top of the league and most will be in the mediocrity stage until the next full rebuild begins.

Pittsburgh
No chance. They're already on the low end of mediocrity right now. They're heading downward over the next 5 years, not treading water.

They're a team that will enter a full tear down and rebuild in the next 5 years.

Rangers as they may have to pay 12 million for a goalie and 10 million for a busted out 1st overall soon. Going to be interesting
Six years ago the Rangers had started a rebuild and have since made the conference finals twice. Their ability to attract talent will seemingly keep them afloat.

Ottawa - too many bad trades. Their good young guys are going to need pricy extensions and the lack of a prospect pool will be painful.

LA - Another team who has made too many poor trades. They don’t have much talent on the way.

Chicago - Eventually they will be good, but they still have massive holes all throughout their lineup. They need a G, a 2C, a Top 4 veteran D and at least one bonafide 1st liner to play with Bedard. 5 years isn’t that much time to fill all those holes.

St. Louis - Pool is above average, but nothing in this organization suggest a contender is coming anytime soon.

Five years is an incredible long time in this league, if you go back five years I'm sure every teams turnover would be pretty extreme.
I'm sure Chicago can fix their problems especially with a guy like Bedard players will be lining up to play with.

Amazingly they don't win cups with all the competitive advantages. Yes they may be afloat to mediocre. Going to be interesting

It’s really not that long. Especially in the middle of a teardown rebuild. Look at Detroit, SJ & Anaheim. They’ve been rebuilding for over 5 years and none are even close to competing yet. Like most things in the NHL it will come down to goaltending.

Really? Nobody could predict that a team with a couple of 20-year old superstars would do extremely well in five years?

This is precisely the kind of team that is very likelly to do well for years to come. But they have underachieved.

The Kings will continue to gut their talent pipeline and be bounced in the 1st round (if they are lucky) with Rob Blake and Luc at the helm with Bergevin behind the scenes (cough Edmundson deal).
Yeah whoever employs Marc Bergevin is bound to be featured here.

Minnesota because it seems like they're stuck in perpetual mediocrity (not intended as a slight against them, I am rooting for them)

Boldy, Rossi and Faber look awesome, but I expect another 6 seasons of 40-ish wins and 1st round exits because the franchise/state of Minnesota is obviously cursed.
100% Agree…In fact - I have used the phrase ‘Minnesota Mediocrity’ numerous times when describing my beloved Red Wings - maybe good enough to make the playoffs - maybe not - if they do make it then we’ll likely lose in the 1st round.

Outside of Edvinsson, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, and Danielson (wax on wax off) I really don’t know if we have any promising prospects…

You better look a little closer to St Louis’ prospect pool and add them to Thomas, Kyrou and Neighbors.
