Speculation: Which player will get the worst contract in this free agent class ?

The way Kuzmenko played with the Kings I wouldn't be surprised if a team gives him 4M+

I think many Kings fans were banking on a 3.75M x 2 type of contract.
Interesting. The way Tocchet benched and scratched him, Vancouver fans weren't sure that he'd get another NHL contract at all

Worst meaning ridiculous , overvalued and bloated ; buyout fodder.

I think everything is aligning for Sam Bennett to get one of the worst contracts in recent memory. I could have sworn I heard Nick Kypreos said on his show today that Sam Bennet would get 90 million dollars. Do you think it will get that bad ? He's a 50 point tweener. "But he's a winner. He got that dawg in him" as Nick also said.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Bennett get $9-$10M+ and it will immediately be one of the worst in the league

He was first, by a mile, on Miro Heiskanen's return from injury, so I'm sure he has some ins.
I'm sure he still talks to guys that he played with, during his time, who might be in management situations. But in terms of trade rumors or what have you, he's not reliable at all. That and one of his big "sources" was Doug MacLean who is not as connected as he once was with most of his peers having retired as well.

I have another prediction…

Bennett is an answer by many people in this thread BUT my prediction is that he signs in FLA and takes a slight discount and then people on this site get mad and say they would have paid him waaaay more to play on their team

Bennett is only getting paid $4.425/year, and the previous contract he received $2.55. Bennett has never gotten paid, and wasted a lot of time on the 4th line in Calgary. This is his only chance to cash in. He'd be really dumb to sign a discount or a short term contract.

I mean it in a way that’s always a sensitive subject on this site lol.. the whole less tax situation where he takes less BUT it’s equivalent to X amount in other cities.

Reality is Sam Bennett will be 29 and has accumulated an extra 61 games and counting the last four seasons with playoff games. Less time to rest, less time to recover each offseason, a lot of extra wear and tear on the body compared to other guys. It’s a cruel joke in some ways that doing that thing you want players to be doing makes you less desirable in some ways because of it. However I think it’s a reality. Would love to have Bennett from the last four seasons. Would have a lot of skepticism about adding him for the next seven seasons.

Using Brayden Schenn as a comp for Bennett (physical, 50-60 point, 2-way center), Schenn signed an 8 year extension at 28 at 6.5M (7.98% of the cap). Adjusting Bennett to 95.5M cap and accounting for 7 years, somewhere between 7.6M and 8.7M for 7 years is probably the floor of what he will get.

Stephenson and Lindholm signed 7-year deals last July for 7.1% and 8.8% of cap, respectively.

In a bidding war, I could easily see Bennett eclipse 9M-10M on AAV. GMs are pretty shrewd around the league but the cap is expected to continue to increase in the short-term.

You're talking about a $500kish difference/year in take home. Sure, maybe Bennett would sign for $8.25 million in Florida vs. $9 million somewhere else. Florida would likely have to add an extra year too. Miami is also a very expensive city, with relatively high consumption and property taxes. And yes, I know that Panthers arena is in Sunrise, which is not part of Miami proper....and only part of the Miami metro area.

Even with a "discount" in Florida, Bennett ends up with an awful contract IMO.

People also need to take into account the massive benefit of getting paid in USD and spending in CAD in Canada. Once you get over the property price hurdle, it's far cheaper to live in Canada right now than the Miami area.

If there is a team looking to win now that wants a 2C for a few years and that team has success in the playoffs, the Bennett contract will be worth it. He can then slide to the 3C for a few years as he fades.

Bennett and Boeser are good and obvious answers

My more out there pick is that someone (probably Detroit) is going to give Ryan Lindgren $5Mx5

I don't think that Boeser at 8mil is a bad deal in the short term, he is better than he is getting credit for. Problem is that he will get 7years at that. I think his foot speed becomes a big issue at the end of the contract. Wouldn't be surprised to see him score 40 the next few years though.

I can see Bennett on the Ducks along with their recent signings of tough, hard nosed vets in Gudas and Trouba. Don’t think he’ll be overpaid though, the Ducks GM is smart

They kind of have the younger version of Bennett in McTavish as 2C. I’m not sure about the fit, though the Ducks are expected to be active in free agency.

Would love Bennett as 2C on the Habs next to Demidov. When you consider the price in trades for a Top 6C paying a premium for a UFA C doesn’t concern me much, with taxes in Quebec I’d expect it takes $9MM and seeing as it ain’t my money hoping our GM uses his connections at Quartexx to get it done, would even send one of our 3rds to FLA for early negotiating rights.

$90/7 is nearly $13m per year

I don't think even Kyper is that dumb.

Sam Bennett. He's an effective player, but I think part of it has to do with his environment. I can see a team paying him to be someone he's not (ala Clarkson).

Christian Dvorak, as he might get a payday from a team hoping he'll be a 2C under favorable circumstances, but he absolutely can't be a top 6, too slow and unable to mesh with anyone with any kind of skill or talent.

Edit: added the word "slow". Sometimes I forget to a word.
