Last season when Toronto played Ottawa in their season opener it was Frederik Gauthier who scored the first Maple Leafs goal of the 2019-20 Season.

So next Wednesday when Toronto plays Montreal in their season opener who will score their first goal of the 2020-21 Season?

I'm going with Matthews because in his career against Montreal he has 12 goals in 14 games played against them. Plus he needs to keep up his streak of scoring on opening night because he has 9 goals in Maple Leafs season opening games.

Matthews....but it’ll be next Friday.....just kidding, sort of...

Simmonds. He apparently rejected the more lucrative offer from the Habs in order to join the Leafs, right? ;)

Matthews is the easy bet went with him.

Powerplay goal from nylander and marner I'm predicting early in the first period.

Matthews going to one time it right past price who realizes the horror of having to play thos guy 9 more times after Jan 13th

When Toronto played Montreal for their season opener during the 2018-19 Season, it was Matthews scoring the Leafs first goal and on the power play.

I wanna' say Vesey will put in a garbage goal if he's playing with Tavares and Marner, but hard to go against Matthews who's done it twice and scored in every opener.

Going back to the 2016-17 Season here is a list of players who scored the Maple Leafs first goal of those years.

2016-17: Auston Matthews

2017-18: Nazem Kadri

2018-19: Auston Matthews

2019-20: Frederik Gauthier

Alexander Barabanov, assisted by Ilya Mikheyev. Somehow they wind up on the same line due to a late line change.
