Proposal: Which fan base would do this trade Matthew Knies For Jesper Wallstedt

It would need to be Gustavsson+ type deal if we didnt have Woll and Stolarz

Since both are good goalies no goalie trade needed.

Knies is only on market in package for a superstar.

Knies + Cowan + 1st for star player under 27 with term who can be the best player or 2nd best player on the team (Werenski in the imaginary scenerio that the Jackets were dealing him)

Since I can't think of any teams tradining their best player who is signed with term and in their prime, leafs will keep Knies and he should be a good 50-70 pt player for the next 6-7 years

Wallstedt went from Guerin telling him to get an apartment in Minneapolis to injuries requiring that he be sent down with no immediate plan to bring him back up. It was emotional whiplash.

His stats are suffering from the awful play from the team early in the year. He’s played 4 AHL games (2 wins, 2 losses .917 sv%) since Thanksgiving. During that time frame, the team overall has 8 wins and 16 losses.

The dude probably has PTSD from all of the high danger scoring chances against. I remember last year he would make 1-2 grade A saves in a sequence just for the opposing team to score on the 2nd/3rd chances because the defense couldn’t clear the puck or take away bodies.

I simply request that people not make assumptions based on stats in this case. There’s a lot more to it.

I'm not denying that the team sucks. Good goalies are still good on teams that bleed chances. You mention mental fortitude multiple times - a huge part of goalie success is mental fortitude. If Wallstedt is breaking down from the mental stress of playing for a terrible team, that is a massive red flag as far as his ability to be a top-level goalie or even just a starter in the NHL.

I still think Wallstedt will be a very good goalie but it was obvious why Toronto wouldn't do that before and its just more obvious based on their careers up until now.

There are also definitely no indications that either of these 22 year olds are final products a mere 4 years after their draft.

That is a terrible take.

He had a .910 in 45 games in the AHL just last season, meanwhile most Toronto fans including myself are excited about Artur Akhtayamov and he only has an .896 in 16 GP this season, is older than Wallstedt and nobody is calling him a bust.

My main issues aren't his raw numbers, they're the reports that he hasn't been playing well and knows that himself, and that the other goalies have been outperforming him this year, whereas he handily outperformed them last year. To me, this has caused me to lower him a tier in my rankings of the Wild prospect pool as it makes me wonder if he's consistent enough to be a franchise-level goaltender. If he's streaky, I'd prefer him to be more of a platoon guy (look at Gustavsson as a reference for what that would mean). I still think he has that high upside, but I've revised how likely I think it is that he reaches it.

As of today, I still wouldn't do this deal, but I'm a lot closer to changing my mind on that, and the main reason I haven't is because we don't have another really great goaltending prospect (though I have some hope for Hlavaj).

I wouldn’t say he’s a bust but it also isn’t just a bad year. It’s teetering on all time bad prospect year for a goalie prospect of his status.

Knies is worth way way more that Wallstadt at this point. He's an established top 6 power winger. He doesn't have superstar upside, but should be a 25-30 goal scorer for years.

Goalies are voodoo, and Wallstadt is having a terrible year. Maybe he'll bounce back, maybe he won't. Askarov looks way better than Wallstadt, and he only returned a 1st rounder in a trade, Knies is worth more than a 1st rounder.

I always liked Wallstadt, hoped the Sens had drafted him. But now, Cossa looks like the far better choice in goal that draft.

At this point, Wallstadt is worth a 3rd round pick.

There is a rumor that Wallstedt has been playing injured this season. He was out with an injury earlier in the season and then in the middle. He's been playing better now that whatever happened is behind him but I would consider this season a wash. The Wild also have had multiple goaltenders go in and out this season. Who knows what is going on?
