If Quinn Hughes were playing I’d give it to them by a nose. Instead it’s Canada, very close.

Canada and the US are pretty close, especially with Hughes out. I’d say McDavid and MacKinnon push Canada slightly ahead despite the goaltending assuming whomever they start doesn’t shit the bed. Having Thompson would have been huge

Missed opportunity to play Marchand with MacKinnon & Crosby

Also, Matthews & M. Tkachuk would be incredible

canadas team is ridiculous but they might as well play with 6 skaters. on the other hand teams have won the cup recently with bargain bin goaltending. shame hughes isnt playing

I was thinking the same until I looked at the difference in goaltending.

I think Binnington will be decent enough with a team like that. I could be wrong though. Should be fun to watch anyway.

Would they not still be pretty close with Hughes playing though? I would still take team Canada if Hughes was on the team. It seems like HF is the only place that thinks team USA is the favourite here.

Yea, but I think the drop from Hughes to Hanifin is pretty major. If MacKinnon was out and replaced with Scheifele, I’d still say it was close, but it’d be a pretty major blow to Canada. I do agree that this place seems to overrate the US a bit, but I do think their healthy defense is a bit better and the forwards aren’t far off, with a large goalie advantage.

I understand the hype around the USA’s goaltending and defence, but I don’t think it matters when you’re facing off against game breaking talent like McDavid, MacKinnon, Makar, Crosby..

Fun fact:

If you look at the goalie stats on Money Puck (not that they're perfect), the top 3 Canadian goalies this year are Logan Thompson, Darcy Kuemper and Mackenzie Blackwood.

...then Cam Tablot, Adin Hill, Sam M and Binnington.

Again, this is just this season and that stat isn't perfect.

your not replacing Hughes with Hanifin, every D-man just moves up a spot, so Slavin replaces Hughes, Werenski replaces Slavin, Hanifin replaces Werenski , Sanderson replaces Hanifin as the 7th. It's a small downgrade for each pair and not a massive downgrade for 1 pair

I get Hughes’ minutes won’t be fully allocated to Hanifin, but you’re still ostensibly replacing him with him in the lineup. I think you’re underrating the downgrade. It’s still probably 18 minutes or so of Hanifin replacing Hughes
