These types of ranking/ordering have been done EVERY summer on this board since 2002/2003.

What gives?

Too much apathy?

Wrong guy in the White House?

Monkeypox got 'ya down???

I'm still waiting for the Summer Random Chat thread where we discuss what we had for breakfast and what we saw when we went shopping today.

In terms of prospects I agree with Bandit.

In all seriousness, I read THN yesterday and they graduated Quinton Byfield, Arthur Kaliyev, Tobias Bjornfot, and Sean Durzi and still ranked LA as one of the top prospect pools in the league which is meaningless but eases the royal soul a little bit :P

My own top-10 rankings (just off the cuff without thinking):
1. Brandt Clarke
2. Alex Turcotte (injuries aside, he literally has everything he needs to be here)
3. Samuel Fagemo
4. Jordan Spence
5. Martin Chromiak
6. Helge Grans
7. Jack Hughes
8. Francesco Pinelli
9. Samuel Helenius
10. Tyler Madden
HM: Akil Thomas and Kim Nousiainen.

Not considering Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Jacob Moverare as I consider those either ready or have graduated in my mind.

Only adjustments I’d make would be to spot both Spence and Grans above Fagemo

I'd rank Simontaival above Helenius. Maybe above Pinelli, too. And Kirill Kirsanov belongs in that top 10 - if he ever comes over.

wil consider Byfield, Kaliyev, Kupari, #25! Durzi as graduated...but not Spence. Perhaps he can be considered graduated, but I consider him as not. He may be in Ontario to start (unless Durzi or Walker moved)

23. Jack Sparkes D
24. Jacob Ingham G
25 Aatu Jamsen....altgough he could be much higher, around 15. Just forgot about him and not wanting to make edits.

Thoughts - list is getting weaker for a few reasons: graduates and dealing Faber. Will have to see a few surpass expectations, ala Durzi. Or, uber achieve, ala Spence. Oh, goaltending sux.

I vote for Laferriere to uber achieve in a yr or 2.
Kind of forgot / not forgot Nousiainen , Doyle and Hrenak. Kim is *maybe* 5'8" He looks up to
Lizotte.
Did not forget Shaffigulan. He forgot us / the Kings.
If Kirsanov ever comes here., he will be kind of like a Matt Roy, with a little more offense.
Biggest enigma : Tyler Madden.

With no criteria for ranking prospects, it’s not surprising that fans sit out a year where there are no high end picks. Unless you’re PJB the second, it’s hard to fluff a D+1++ when they only perform a little bit better a year later.

I’d start with the definition of “graduated”. For me, 100 nhl games or off their ELC is graduation. So Toby and Gabe would be yeses and Byfield and Kaliyev would be no, as of today.

  1. Byfield, C
  2. Brandt Clarke, D
  3. Arthur Kaliyev, F
  4. Jordan Spence, D
  5. Alex Turcotte, F (If I was certain he’d stay fit he’s #3)
  6. Akil Thomas, F (Now he’s 100% fit for the first time in a few years he is a potential big surprise)
  7. Martin Chromiak, W (can’t split him from Fagemo)
  8. Samuel Fagemo, W (can’t split him from Chromiak)
  9. Helge Grans, D
  10. Alex Laferriere, C (He’s going to surprise us all)
  11. Franceso Pinelli, C
  12. Jack Hughes, C
  13. Andre Lee, F (Once he’s adjusted to the pro game he gets called up quickly)
  14. Aatu Jamsen, W
  15. Kasper Simontaival, F
  16. Samuel Helenius, F
  17. Kirill Kirsanov, D (politics sends him down my list as he’s otherwise top 10)
  18. Kim Nousiainen, D
  19. Otto Salin, D
  20. Lukas Parik, G
  21. Jared Wright, F
  22. Angus Booth, D
  23. Taylor Ward, F
  24. Tyler Madden, W
  25. Kenny Connors, F
  26. Jack Sparkes, D
  27. Jacob Ingham, G
  28. Ben Meehan, D

I really like the college draft picks from this year the more I learn. They are really big upside project players. The guys that have had injury problems also have big upside with the draft position skewed because of it. A very interesting group.

Edit: Missed Kupari. He’s just behind Akil Thomas for me. I think we criminally under rate Thomas. Especially upon learning that he’d been carrying shoulder issues since his draft year. I thought was under rated before I knew that, so my hopes remain high. I also think he will start showing a more physical element as he commented that his shoulders had meant he couldn’t fight and he was looking forward to be able to do so (I‘m paraphrasing).

Goalies I’ve ranked low, probably too low, because they are goalies.

Only small tweaks to Statto's really, and probably missed someone

Graduations imo: JAD, Bjornfot, Dudas, Byfield, Vilardi, Kupari, Kaliyev.

1. Brandt Clarke, D--I think he's special, very unique player.
2, Alex Turcotte, C--everyone knows how high I am on him. Just needs to stay healthy to show out.
3. Jordan Spence, D--I've always been high on Spence but never thought he'd adapt this fast.
4. Akil Thomas, F--We're sleeping on Thomas.
5. Sammy Fagemo, F--plug and play middle six 15-20g, 30-40p guy. This forum will hate him :sarcasm:
6. Alex Laferriere, F--see above, IMO.
7. Martin Chromiak, W--little bit of a wild card for me, I think he's 'better' than the above two, but also a little more boom or bust. I think he either sticks as a Tyler Toffoli-esque top-six option or busts out altogether, not a lot to offer a bottom six.
8. Helge Grans, D--Baby Brent Burns, looking for him to have a huge year and start making people pay attention.
9. Jack Hughes, C--Kind of on the heels of the above, I get a bit of a Stastny-lite vibe.
10. Tyler Madden, W--Has had it rough as a pro but has too big a brain and too much pedigree to not figure it out, also dad is a tank, I'd be shocked if he didn't start filling out soon.
11. Andre Lee, F--I have him as a camp surprise trying to force their way into an already-crowded bottom six, he should really have a great year in Ontario.
12. Samuel Helenius, F--4C of the future, Martin Hanzal jr.
13. Franceso Pinelli, C--I don't hate him, just didn't take a large step forward. This year is pretty crucial for him. Still gives me a Brandon Saad vibe a bit.
14. Kirill Kirsanov, D--I don't think we ever see him here frankly, probably gets traded to WSH or either Florida team.
15. Kim Nousiainen, D--Not sure he cuts it in the NHL with his size, but he's going to be an absolute baller in Ontario.
16. Otto Salin, D--Can't shake a couple of more familiar folks saying he's the steal of the draft. Get the feeling he's going to be in our top-10 prospects by the end of the year.
17. Taylor Ward, F - Really interesting trajectory and emergence. Hard to place, limited upside, but I like his game, just has that 'tweener' vibe.
18. David Hrenak, G--interested tos ee what he has to offer in first full pro year!
19. Lukas Parik, G--A little more boom/bust than I thought he'd be, still think he's high ceiling. Looking forward to more games from him this year.
20. Jacob Ingham, G--I think Ingham is on Parik's heels and he's more 'boring' but could be more effective.
21. Kaleb Lawrence W--It's all upside.
22. Aatu Jamsen, W--Like Chromiak, pretty good ceiling, but good odds of busting altogether.
23. Kasper Simontaival, F--Kinda starting to lose faith, not because he's bad, just a numbers game. But I love that he's built like a fire hydrant and he's adept at darting in and out...but like Chromiak does he ever offer enough scoring to stick? Because he doesn't offer much else.
24. Juho Markkanen, G- Had a pretty good year as a youngster among men, lot of jumping around though, looking for a consistent stable year from him.
25. Kenny Connors, F - Lot of good follow up on him after the draft, but how many bottom sixers does he have to leap?
26. Jared Wright, F - See above.
27. Angus Booth, D - I could probably have him a bit higher, or closer to Salin. But there's a lot of work to do and I'm not sure of his upside.
28. Jack Sparkes, D - Upside is immense, just like him.
29. Braden Doyle, D - From what I saw/read he improved a bit, but this year will be pivotal for him and Meehan.
30. Ben Meehan, D - Kind of a forgotten man, I think he's at least going to be a very good AHLer.

Bulat Shafigullin, Johan Sodergran--Shafigullin, I don't think ever comes over, see Dergachyov. Sodergran I've sadly lost faith in, too many injuries and no confidence, never again saw the guy who seemed to realize he was bigger and stronger than everyone else at camp.

If Byfield is not graduated, he's still #1.

If he is, then Clarke is #1 and Spence is #2. I guess Turcotte is #3 but, shit, it is only because the list isn't very eye-popping.

RJ's list above is pretty sad when compared to even last year's list. Pretty rough year all-around for the vaunted prospect pool outside of the Spence blow-up, Kaliyev and Durzi.

There are always surprises and Spence was low on the list last season so there are a bunch of names that could be higher come next season but that graduated list of RJ's is not as established as we all hoped. Here's hoping we see much larger strides forward next season: emphasis on forward.

Well, I listed 7 graduations above--JAD, Bjornfot, Dudas, Byfield, Vilardi, Kupari, Kaliyev. Add two more in Durzi, Moverare. add a trade in Faber. Anyone else I missed? Regardless, that's 'losing' ten mostly top prospects, so considering the situation, that's not a bad list. It's more like a top-10 or so prospect pool, maybe lower depending on how you see depth vs. high-end. But it basically got gutted.

I agree, I expect some of these guys to really surprise and advance, but I also agree we need bigger strides (cough playing time cough) forward.

In addition to graduation I think we need a time to breakout projection for refining ranking criteria. So take Clarke for example. Is he a top 3 prospect if he doesn’t project to break out for 3+ more years?

Grundstrom finally broke out, and frankly, so did Kempe when you look at how much he produced given his ice time. How long have these guys been graduated?

I think it’s useful because you would inherently factor in the players age. Byfield is #1 today. If he plays in the AHL next year, does that mean he slips no matter how well he does in a lower league?

I’m biased because I rank the older guys higher, because afaik, this is supposed to be a depth chart, not fan boy wish list. So last year, after QB, I had guys like Kupari and Clague because I expected them to be most nhl ready.

I had Byfield and Kaliyev as not graduated as they have less that 82 games and are on their ELC’s. Granted Arty by 1 game…

It wouldn’t shock me if Parik suddenly blew up into something and I think Ingham has a shot as a backup. I’ve been taught a bit about scouting goaltending but at their ages it’s so unpredictable, hence I had them so low because it’s so uncertain either way.

Makes sense, I won't begrudge anyone the arbitrary 'prospect' line. I've seen some at 'nhl games played,' others at age, some at a half season, some at more than a full season. It's all got it's own merit.

I'm endlessly fascinated by the fan and pundit conversations surrounding the goaltending prospects.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a larger gulf between the oft repeated talking points and then... you know... reality.

Going which direction? I feel like most prospects writers/rankings consistently mention that goaltending is our pool’s only weak area (Pronman, Wheeler, Elite Prospects, etc.).

I mean, Yannetti admitted we were trying to trade back into the first round last year to get Wallstedt. We haven’t drafted a goalie in the 1st round since Bernier, so that says a lot about how our management team feels about our goaltending depth. I think if they felt better about it they’d have just continued picking goalies in the later rounds and trusting internal development/pro scouting. At this point I feel more confident that we’ll acquire another reclamation project like Campbell or Kuemper rather than one of our drafted goalies reaching NHL starter status (which honestly might just be a better strategy given that we have more data on those guys as more mature goalies).

I am going to have to disagree here for a superabundance of reasons:

There are people who think the earth is flat
You would feel differently if you had read the Covid threads here
Jefe' once told El Guapo that he had a plethora of piñatas without even knowing what a plethora is
People watch The Kardashians and buy their products
Kevin Federline is somehow in the news again
People still listen to The Grateful Dead
