Gilbert Brule was in a lot of people's mind going to be a absolute force in the NHL when he was drafted, and CBJ thought the same when they rushed him to the NHL.

Of course as you all know the story, Gilbert Brule had a terrible year and has gone south since then, even being traded to the Oilers.

So where would Gilbert Brule rank in the "going to be superstar" but Failed drastically bust's.

*PS* - yes I know he is still young and can still break out, but as for right now, there are no signs he will.

EDIT: Zomg he is playing well now, good job brule

As far as his potential of being a superstar, he is a major bust. But you never know, he could just be a late bloomer waiting to happen. I hope for the best from him.

look at bobby Ryan, he was 2nd overall pick and just came up this season. Some of these kids need time and i know you said that. As of now he is a bust for hwat was exoected of him, but luckily and hopefully he will find a way.

I will always remember the game in the Mem Cup in Moncton and the battles that he is Luc Bourdon had. That and the WJHC and how i will remember Bourdon.

Play of Ryan this year accentuates how big of bust Brule has been to date.

For a player who drew comparisons to Crosby as a Junior, Brule has undergone a huge slide.

At least Oilers can retain him without much cost.

I don't think it's fair to call him a bust. Columbus was brutal in handling him, and he hasn't landed in any kind of situation where anybody really believes in him.

I would not be surprised at all to see him take a Dan Cleary-esque trajectory. He floats around and is given up on, takes some time to mature, and becomes a gritty type of player with some scoring touch.

I don't mean to be the know it all of the place, but was he that good in the first place? I know he has a nice skill set but his production in Vancouver seems to have come up mostly on the power play, and if there's something volatile in hockey IMO is offensive production when it comes mostly from PP, 90 points and +4 makes you wonder. With that said his career isn't over by any means, but sometimes it's not that he's a bust, it's just that people have great expectations of something that isn't there. Somtimes we call players busts to justify wrong evaluations IMO.

Considering at one time a certain TSN analyst said he'd take Brule over Crosby....:laugh:

This kid has fallen hard off the map. He would be up there.

As of right now he could spend the next 15 years playing as a checker for a 3rd line. He is great in the defensive end, has speed and is physical.

The problem is you want him to be more and Brule missed out on prime development years cause he was good defensively. Columbus concern was trying to win so since Brule could help out defensively he played 8-10 minutes a game in the NHL in the bottom six, when he should have been playing 20+ in the AHL.

Someone mentioned Dan Cleary and that's probably a good comparison. Guy will take a while to hit his stride but in the end he'll be a gritty player who can chip in pretty well. Still very far off from what he was supposed to be.

Is it really fair to talk about Brule's struggles to get a strangle hold on a NHL career without talking about his injury troubles?

Based on his size and his style of play injuries may very well dog him for his whole career (whatever that may end up being) and that in itself may help qualify him as a bust but being a bust inpart because of injuries is different from being a bust because of attitude or work ethic or juts outright not being good enough.

If true, how weak-minded is Brule? Either you play or you can't. Perhaps Brule's skills in junior just didn't translate well to the NHL?

They were brutal in handling him because he sucks?

Brule's career thus far has been marred by injury and massive mishandling. Even so, here's a list of those who are before him on the bust list if Brule were never to ever touch a hockey stick again:

Dave Chyzowski
Scott Scissons
Patrik Stefan
Alexander Svitov
Pavel Brendl
Daniel Tkaczuk
Alexandre Volchkov
Steve Kelly
Terry Ryan
Jason Bonsignore
Daniel Dore
Neil Brady
Gord Kluzak
Doug Wickenheiser

probably missing others.

Oh, and he's ONLY 22! Give him a bit more time.

No, Maclean had this huge ego with Brule. Played him straight out of juniors when he was clearly not ready. He had 4 pts in 7 games mainly because of adrenaline and his naivety to the NHL, and once he got injured he realized that the game was too fast and hard for him. Maclean didn't want to admit the mistakes he made with Brule so he just kept putting more pressure on him, dubbing him the 2nd line center in his second year. He obviously wasn't ready and the rest is pretty much history.

Let me help you a little with that list:

Alexandre Daigle
Aki Berg
Chad Kilger
Pat Faloon or as some called him "Fat Balloon"
Brian Lawton

I blame Doug Maclean for rushing him, and monster bertuzzi/tsn for hyping him
