Where is Rantanen? Who is Rantanen? Why is Rantanen? What is Rantanen?

nah he still wouldn't have been a factor if colorado still had him. B2B hattricks mean nothing from the byproduct of Mackinnon's play

Imagine trading such a player over an extra 250-500k/year.
The difference between ask and offer was around $3M AAV when the Avs traded him, not $250-500k.

Not saying the Avs made the right move, but it’s misleading to frame it like they were playing hardball over some minuscule amount.

not in any world did he demand 14.75M from the team he actually wanted to be on but then settled a couple months later in dallas for 12 without testing FA

Going a bit against the grain here. You could still argue Colorado paying Rantanen Nate money wasn't going to be wise. Three players taking a massive portion of the cap is detrimental to the depth of the team and with Mikko being a winger on Mack's line instead of driving his own line the firepower is too consolidated — and then you factor in that Mack and Mikko were run to the ground playing them 21-23 mins a game year in year out.

Toronto is looking good right now but it's the same with them: too much money in a few forwards and nothing to show for it. The Avs did manage to win the Cup with that core once but the team was deeper back then and Mack was famously the most underpaid player in the league.

As for the Avs' alternative, having traded Rantanen: obviously it hasn't been great but they were the favorites going in against Dallas and arguably dropped the ball (ie. writing a story where they lost rather than Dallas winning).

This all is nothing to take away from Rantanen, quite a hero's journey this spring!

I understand why the Avs did the trade but the real issue is, did they get enough in return? Rantanen is making their front office look horrible

What are you talking about? Rantanen's camp reportedly asked 13M AAV and Colorado offered 11.6M. That's a difference between 1.4M.

His ask in Colorado was “around 14M” x 8

His ask in Carolina was 14 x 8

Idk his ask from the Stars but 3 hours before the TDL Dallas’s offer of 12M x 8 was considered “not even close” to acceptable to Rantanen & agent and it looked like the deal was falling through, to the point that other options were explored by CAR.

It wasn’t until 90 mins before the deadline that he accepted the 12x8 offer from Dallas. Andy Scott & Rantanen didn’t blink until the last possible moment.

So yes, he was asking for $14.xx Million from Colorado, before settling for 12M from Dallas.

So In an hour and a half he went from “not even close” to signing the deal unaltered?

That's all true, but here are the follow up questions:

- Is this the right strategy going forward considering there are still two top heavy teams in the playoffs and the Avs lost in the first round? With rising cap Colorado would still have their star players for cheaper than the Maple Leafs or the Oilers. Only time will tell.

- Does Rantanen not driving his own line in Colorado speak more about his talent or the Avs coaching? Right now he's looking good with the Stars' first and fourth line, and Bednar didn't even utilize the depth they got from him well. I would argue it's more difficult to find a top player in the league than good coaching. The Oilers' tried the opposite route after years of speculating about trading Draisaitl for more depth, and it's interesting to see if one strategy seems better than the other in the future.

The biggest criticism by Avs fans: "But Rantanen can't carry his own line."

And now he's in Dallas carrying two lines simultaneously. Is the Stars' fourth line this much better than the Avs' second line ever was, or should the Avs' coaching staff take a hard look in the mirror about how they utilized Rantanen to create secondary scoring?

He's not just carrying his own line, he's carrying the whole team. And that isn't to say Dallas is playing poorly. They aren't. Rantanen is just playing that damn good right now. Crazy how this thread started a week or so ago because he hadn't scored at all. Now he's leading the whole playoffs.

Yeah. Is that surprising to you?

Seems like standard negotiation/posturing to me, by an agent who was playing hardball in order to get his client the best possible deal (and himself the best possible commission).
I think if a reporter told you there was treasure in Antarctica you’d be chipping ice tomorrow
