Speculation: Where does Russell sign?

Franson got 2.3 last year.

I really doubt he's getting more than 3 at most.

Franson got 3.25 with his bonuses and should get the same this year. Russel should get 3.5 on the open market

I still think people are way too brutal on Russell. Be the first to admit that he sits too far back on defense when he should be more mobile but it worked.

He always saved or contributed to more goals than he allowed. Yes, he gets out corsi'd consistently but he doesn't let people get in behind him and he doesn't let shots around him go uncontested. That stuff matters. He is a pain to play against.

He has well above average skating and passing and is an excellent penalty killer.

Dallas misused him horribly. Played 11 games with them, 8 out of the last 10 he was given 23 minutes over over. Four of those games he was over 27 for TOI. That is outrageous! He is a solid #4. They used him as a top pairing guy. Four points in 11 games on a new team while being fed to the wolves is decent as well. With a better situation I think he can hit 35-40 points. Thought he was fine vs Minnesota but the whole Dallas team looked terrible against St Louis.


Somehow we could get rid of Wideman and Engellend and I would like the Flames to offer him 3.5M x 2

Edit; Just wanted to add I think Dallas picked the wrong ex-Flame to sign. Hamhuis can play the role that they tried to force Russell into and that would actually allow them to play Russell where he belongs.

He played that much when the Stars lost Klingberg, Demers and Jordie Benn to injury for a while. Someone had to play those minutes.

Regarding Hamhuis by the way . I firmly believe now Hamhuis was the Stars target but the stupid ownerfeud killed the damn thing and Nill had to settle for Russel. In the end it sucked for everyone but Calgary. We got an inferior player , the Canucks lost Hamhuis for absolutely nothing and Russel is still unsigned in early September.

Reports before the weekend said he was likely to sign in the next week. So possibly something in the next few days.

That stretch he was far more than decent. He was superb. He didn't have a great start, but neither did the D. But over the course of the season I think he was pretty good, far from awful - his quality starts percentage was over .541, higher than Anderson, Varlamov, Rinne, Dubnyk, Smith, Ward, Miller, Talbot, Bernier, Mason, Howard, Niemi, Lack, Bobrovski, Lehtonen and just below Jones, Rask, Darling, and Gibson. He wasn't excellent but he also wasn't the problem.

After the first month, he went 14-2-2 with a .917 sv%. That's pretty solid on a team that was so awful on the PK and at allowing high danger scoring chances.

Yep, after Ramo got sent down he really turned it around. His injury was just the final nail in the coffin. Hiller got like 6 games as a starter and blew them all.

Hope someone gives him a PTO at least. Still think he's a a solid 1B guy.

There is a 'rumor' that Russell is waiting to sign with the Flames, but they need to deal with some bad contracts first. Unlikely, but you never know.

I think Russell would be a perfect fit in New Jersey, Yeah i'm thinking he wants money that teams just aren't willing to give him we shall see.

Sounds like he's waiting for certain teams to shed some salary here it sounds like. Heard possibly back to Calgary plus the Boston and New Jersey names come up as well.

Having Wideman and Russell as our 3rd pairing would be kind of sweet. They were way over their heads as a 1B pairing two years ago but they would do great as a 3rd pairing.

Smid is most likely going on LTIR so he's easy.
I think Engelland would make most teams 3rd pairing if we retained some money.
Wideman can also be a #5 and PP specialist on most teams.

I was really hoping for a busier summer from Treliving.
