Speculation: Where does Ekblad go, and for how much?

Detroit is the sneaky team to watch out for, and speculation is, they’ll overpay on both term and dollars. In fact, it’s not even sneaky anymore. It’s expected they’ll make a run if he hits July 1.

It’s home for Ekblad. He’s a Windsor kid who played for Sun County. For those who don’t know, that’s a Detroit suburb, not Toronto.

He’s also the perfect mentor for Seider, Edvinsson, and ASP. We could see a 7 year $8-$9 million AAV deal, where they expect him to play 4-5 years.

Two weeks ago, I would’ve said there’s a great chance he ends up in Detroit. Stanley Cups tend to mend relationships with teams and players though. So we shall see.

If they did sign Ekblad AND a Ryan Lindgren or Nic Hague, that D-Core becomes a massive strength rather than a very young and raw D-Core.

So overpaying Ekblad is well worth it for Detroit, from several different angles.

Unfortunately for the Leafs, don’t think they even have a puncher’s chance at getting him. Pretty sure it’s Florida or Detroit, with Dallas being the 3rd team, who could take a legit run at getting him.

Exciting time of the year.

Yeah listen here bros...do banned drugs....sit out a while. Get suspended for chicken shit hits....success....(oh wait his theory is working....) Great mentor though....

My quick guess is that 29 teams teams will bid on him(Dubas, Dallas and Edmonton hate defense and I guess won't be bidding on a defensive player). So Vegas will probably win him. Probably for Pietrangelo's money and he just replaces him.

I doubt PeterAngelo is willing to sit out for a chance at the Olympics.

Ekblad likely stays in Florida. They have 24 million of cap room heading into the summer. Only valuable players that needs re signing are Bennett ekblad and Marchand.

I think Ottawa Philly Rick likes big dmens and blue jackers (47 million of cap space and almost made the playoffs) might make an offer.

Would he have interest in Anaheim?

He has played for Q before. Anaheim can afford a hefty check as we lack a top pair RHD, there's plenty of talent coming up, weather is sunny

I wouldnt even call it sneaky. They need to upgrade their defence, hes essnetially a hometown boy and his wife is also from there. Win a couple cups, then go play out your career where both sets of grandparents are around to help raise kids, never miss a holiday etc.

Outside of the Panthers I would probably have Detroit as the favourite

Red Wings never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity so they probably won't sign Ekblad.

Where do you get 24M from? I see 19M : https://puckpedia.com/team/florida-panthers

They'll need to resign Samoskevich rouhgly 2.5-3M
If Bennett signs for 8M like reported and they get a 6th defenseman for 1M, a 13th forward for 1M and 2nd goalie for 1M, it leaves them 5.5M to resign Ekblad. I don't think he'd leave that much on the table.

They'll probably have to dump someone like Rodrigues if they want to retain Ekblad.

somewhere in the east that needs a DFD. injuries have derailed him the last few years. maybe somebody gives him 2x4.5ish.

I would be very surprised if he got less than 7 per for at least 5 years.

It might not be the right move, but you know a GM will pay him.

Look I'm not going to say I wouldn't want him because the thought of a Ekblad, Tanev, Carlo right side would be something I'd be interested in for sure because I'm always interested in things that make Toronto better.

But Ekblad would be nice to have, he's not NEEDED that defense is solid going into next season It's set.

They just need to trade Rodrigues and they can sign Ekblad for $9m.

Trade Rodrigues, who has no trade protection, for a pick and sign a veteran to a league minimum contract or call up an ELC and you'll have enough money to sign Ekblad for up to $9m with a 22 man roster.
Don't wanna touch him at 9 per

I still dont believe he leaves Florida, but if he does theres going to be 25+ teams after him. Because in a world where the cap is skyrocketing, what team wouldnt be better by adding a top pairing RD that costs nothing but cap space?

I dont think he'll go to a bad team or undesirable market, because he won't have to.

I'd look at the following as favorites:

Dallas should trade Robertson for futures. Dumba, Lybushkin, Marchment for whatever they can get. That'd clear room for Ekblad (exactly what they need) and a filled out roster with cheap players.

Vegas if Petro is indeed done would be smart to replace him with Ekblad. This Marner talk is nonsense.

Toronto is an obvious perfect fit if Ekblad wants to join that circus.

Carolina and St Louis would round out my top 5 guesses (assuming Florida is out).
