Berube was the man to end the great St. Louis drought which was impressive by itself. No coach aside from Scotty Bowman has ever won a cup coaching different teams.

In the context of ending the largest and second largest cup droughts in the league with a separate teams, what would that do for his legacy as a coach? Is that enough to shoot him up into the all time lists with the greats given how significant of an accomplishment that would be in the history of the game and potentially all of sports?

Remember, the important thing is not that it would be his 2nd Cup as a coach, it's that he was the coach of the Leafs, and they're the main character of the NHL.

The main point is he would have won 2 cups with 2 teams, and both cups ended the 2 largest cup droughts. It's such a statistical anomaly as it is, but the significant of what those cups represents is what I mean.

This is a serious thread I want real answers.

I would imagine any coach that wins 2 Cups with different teams would get praised, yes

Obviously a long way to go before we start writing historical legacies so I guess you could make "serious threads" about impact of legacy for all 16 teams that could win it.

This thread makes a whole lot more sense if the Leafs are in the cup final, or at least leading the ECF.
To have it before even 1 game has been played is some bad juju

Don't care about juju. Leafs are going to have to overcome many curses and pull a Kratos and kill the hockey gods to win anyways.

I am more curious about the idea than it being thrown back in my face. I am not guaranteeing the Leafs win the cup.

I dunno. But I don't even know if people regard Jon Cooper/Trotz/Maurice as top 10/15/20 and he would probably go behind them. 0.532 winning percentage is nothing otherworldly especially without having coached many seasons. He would probably be a top 25 coach that is just very appreciated in two particular markets and not much more.

It's fun to shit on the Leafs fans here. I understand that's the popular sentiment fan and as a Sabres guy, I get it. But I think this was an honest question and I don't get why it's getting immediate blowback. People remember the coaches who won memorable Cups disproportionately to those who won a single cup or no cups.

Berube bringing a title to two franchises that gained a ton of public attention for their droughts is a big deal. I don't think he's top 20 or anything, but he's going to remembered a lot more than some of his peers if he wins this year.

Of course he would get a statue and/or warranted praise.
He will find out how much he likes the playoff core 4 though and whether they can be the clutch guys when the time calls for it. [Game 6 and 7]

This is a very hypothetical thread though, it'd make sense if Leafs were heading to the ECF or SCF right now.

Hasn’t even been a puck drop and this thread gets made. Oh man.

This is a better question when the finals start

For now - a more interesting question is:
“Where did Toronto fans rank Berube on the active coaches list before he joined the leafs vs after?”

Answer- went from pedestrian to legendary god instantly. I’ll start prepping his tombstone next to Carlyle, Maurice, Babcock, Wilson, and Keefes in the Coach cemetery. All went from legends to strait garbage and ran out of town. I’ll give you Babcock - sounds like he was a garbage human, past coaching success aside.

We are starting off the playoffs right with this thread. Love it. lol.

Probably the GOAT? I mean he has coached the Leafs to the top of the Atlantic Division - something no other coach has done - and they're well on their way to their first cup since '67.

The real question is how long do they wait until the statue goes up?

Posts outrageous takes and main board threads daily but…

The obvious answer is he would be #1 coach of all time and Leafs would over take the other dynasties as best team who ever skated on ice.

While we're on this hypothetrical train...

What if PK Subban and Brad Marchand both switched into coaching careers and co-coached the Maple Leafs to three consecutive titles starting in 2046?
But before that, Connor McDavid, after retiring with boatloads of cash from his playing career, linked up with Rick DiPietro and his boatload of cash, bought the Leafs and relocated them to Otobicoke in 2038?

The main point is they would have won 3 Cups due to the management and ownership changes so would they be the best ownership/front office group in sports history?

Thankfully the League and its champions are not predicated upon what-ifs.

bruh

first round hasn't even started. Let's keep this thought in our heads until at least the confernce finals (if we make it)
