Where do the Leafs go if they blow it yet again?

I think the whole FO gets blown out. They have more departments and staff than any team in the league, and it hasn't done shit that other teams don't do much cheaper. MLSE is going to weed out the rest of the Dubas bloat and entitlement culture and give the reigns to Tre and Berube to decide how to rebuild this tire fire.
So is Shamaplan gone?

Why do you think that everybody who disagrees with you is a leafs fan lol? What about my “trusting the yzerplan” and Raymond pic makes you think I give a f*** about toronto ?

The argument is that for all the guys that don’t want to play in toronto bc of the media/ pressure, there’s a good chunk that do because a massive amount of hockey players are from Ontario. That one province provides 20% of the players in the entire NHL, the same as Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, and Czechia combined. Tavares went to toronto as a top FA simply because it’s home. It’s not some illogical argument to say guys might want to go play for their home team lol, or otherwise could be drawn to fame and notoriety. It stands to reason that the players in Florida may have chosen that destination because they’re low profile there, so naturally they might have the opinion that being in a low pressure market is better…

I guarantee you if the Habs were crushed 9 years in a row in the playoffs in increasingly heartbreaking fashion, those fans would be lining up to attack the players that gave zero effort like Matthews et al. This isn’t a toronto issue, it’s a big market issue. Vancouver is the same - they lit the f***ing city on fire after a SC loss. The only way to avoid the same fate is to win/give it your all, or play in a US city that doesn’t care about hockey. Not all players want to do that. NHL players aren’t a monolith.
Nothing you said needs to be said lmao. Of course there will always be some guys willing to play in Toronto regardless of how tough it is. What a amazing and thoughtful point that is to make my guy.

The point is that Toronto just ran Marner out of town last night, players in the league notice shit like that. Not hard to follow dude. Try to keep up.

Also I don't give a f*** if you're a Leafs fan or not. I really don't know who you are or care about you at all. Not everything I say is about you.

…you quoted me and mentioned leafs fans? It wasn’t a big leap to make…

Players in the league aren’t stupid. If the Bruins were eliminated 9 times in a row with a piss poor showing from Pastrnak every single time he’d also be booed. You’re acting like it’s some isolated one time event that Leafs fans are losing their mind on. They lost the most elimination games in a row ever, this is quite literally record setting levels of failure by a single core.

Right, but the Bruins haven't been eliminated 9 times in a row.

Maybe a record setting level of failure might make a team less appealing? This really isn't a hard concept to grasp my guy.

He performed well during the contract, it only "looks bad" because the league had a flat cap for most of it due to a massive decline in revenues.
No, it looks bad because Tavares was the last thing an already soft and skilled Leafs team needed. Had Toronto used that money on grit and/or depth to complement their trio of young stars, they would have stood a better chance at winning more than two rounds in the last seven years. Instead, the club was impatient and ended up destroying their future before it really began.

Sure, but that’s not really about toronto, it’s about the core. I agree guys might not want to join that core. But it doesn’t make toronto less appealing as a destination long term. Jsut means they have to blow that core up, and it really is about time to do that anyway. The only ones that should remain are Nylander and Rielly.

Is there another team sport where a large portion of players try to escape media pressure as much as possible?
I mean, it's clear from many viral videos in the NFL, NBA at the very least that many people hate the press and do as little as possible to fulfill their obligations to them. NHL may do it just a smidge more blandly, but look at any number of pressers from NBA stars rolling their eyes, NFL coaches and QBs avoiding detail at all costs in their answers, etc etc. I don't think this is unique to the NHL, but the media scrutiny is uniquely circus like and intense in TOR versus much of the rest of the league. Not an excuse at all for players or their performance, just think it's objectively clear and true that there's more scrutiny in TOR.

Dude nobody ran Marner out of Toronto lol where the f*** are you getting that from?? Only thing players noticed last night was Mitch hiding in his shadow again and failing to to step into the bright lights and putting the team on his back and performing in a game 7. Marner for the first time in his career needs to look in the mirror and hold himself accountable instead of looking for excuses. His “wake the f*** up” explosion last night with dry hair was super rich.

Second period, down 3-0 and he doesn’t have a drop of moisture in his hair lol 😂 yeah he was really putting it on the line.

You know what’s super annoying??? Every year Leafs fans get told “you guys are running your players out of town, look how classless you are” you realize you’re defending players that are making 10-13 million dollars a year!!! All this failure isn’t on the fans it’s on every single Leaf player. The standards and expectations from Leafs fans is actually super f***ing low. Imagine how crazy we were about to go just making a Conference Finals and these losers couldn’t even do that

Okay so they blow up the core, then good players are going to be lining up to join a rebuilding team with an irate fanbase? I don't really see it.

It absolutely makes Toronto less appealing as a destination, especially if those core players go on to find success in other markets as guys like Kadri did.

I’m just saying it has nothing to do with Toronto as a destination/fanbase, at least not relative to any other fanbase that cares about hockey like anywhere else in Canada or Boston/Detroit/NYC/etc. players don’t want to join rebuilding teams in general. If and when toronto retools w a diff core that isn’t plagued with the ghosts of Matthews and Marner, I don’t see why any guy would avoid them unless they don’t want to play in any big market period. So not a toronto specific issue

The lack of accountability from Leaf fans is staggering. That's why they'll never win.

I read an article that the number one thing Toronto scouts are trying to figure out when they draft players is how afraid of failure they are. Because if they are afraid at all, then they won't make it in the Toronto market. The amount of players in the league that want to risk having beer tossed at them and booed mercilessly by those fans is going to be low. Even if it's not happening to them, do you think guys like Tavares, Domi, or Tanev enjoyed seeing their teammate booed to hell and have shit thrown at them?

Who told you beers were being thrown at players?? I saw jerseys being thrown on the ice but f*** me do you blame fans for booing??? They got bent over and spanked like a child getting disciplined by their dad. 6-1 annihilation in a game 7 where they gave up in the 2nd period

Nobody outside of Marner is going to remember what happened last night in a few weeks.

Some players will never be drawn to popular markets, this has been true during the entirety of the modern NHL existence. In the meantime, money, or desire to play for a hometown team Will always be big draws regardless.

The idea that images from last night's game is going to be burned into the minds of each and every free agent for years to come seems pretty laughable.

Pure cope. Marner was a hometown boy too once. I guarantee you some NTC will be getting updated this offseason. The hype around Toronto is dead, nobody is looking at that team as a destination. They'll still get some chumps willing to sign, but the best FA will 100% be looking elsewhere.

I mean we all saw the beer man. Make up more excuses I guess, the fan behavior was pathetic. A true black eye on an already manic fanbase who has no class. Look at all the fights leaf fans start on the road, in Florida, in Ottawa its well documented. Why not go to the game enjoy it and go home, always has to be chanting things like 'this is our house'. Then you see one guy wearing a panthers jersey walking around t.o and the verbal abuse and physical threats were out of control all the guy was doing was walking around. A large potion of the fanbase is entitled with no class. It was proven in games 5 and 7. In games 3,4,6 in ottawa and everyone saw the leaf fan starting the fights in florida.

DAMN........

Toronto doesn't have their 1st till 2028. I had no idea. I thought it was just this year and next.

still dont understand why Laughton cost so much, he was more expensive than Marchand.
Laughton was extremely underwhelming, i expected more grit, cheap shots, and terrorizing around the goalie.

Omg lol cope harder dude. Maybe take a break and go cry and get some of this off your chest. WTF did I just read. It’s sports man, if heckling bothers you this much maybe find another hobby

What happens if a when Florida smashes Carolina in 5 games and wins the cup again?

Are the leafs really that far off?
when your top players dont show up and your depth can't handle it...yes, very much so.

Its not that they lost to the panthers, its HOW they lost. Its still very much an immature team and the core just can't perform, and they showed zero heart during the series.

Is this current Leafs core good enough to be considered the favourite against Florida, so losing would be “blowing it”?
Maybe the current Leafs core just isn’t good enough? They didn’t blow it; they were soundly beaten by a far better club.,

Not sure about trievling he got fleeced on the Bennett and MT trade in Calgary ( doubt he can even land there now). I also think he got hosed on the laughton and carlo deal. He has a checkered history of making moves.

lol am I sensing some political projection here? All of a sudden MLSE needs to save money on hockey ops by streamlining? What a bizarre take.

One of the things Toronto has going for it to attract FA’s is first class everything. Support staff, catering, facilities, etc.

But sure, they should eliminate that advantage by worrying about cutting corners and pinching pennies.

The fan and media pressure stuff is incredibly overblown. The size of the market and the noise allows the Maple Leafs to be a bohemeath, who can give players everything they could want and then some in terms of their day-to-day experience. It allows them to fill their jeans with even more money through ads and sponsorships. Care about a cause? RT that Go Fund Me or hold a golf tournament with more eyeballs and more sponsors than they'll get anywhere else. Players in Toronto are able to leverage the market and its fanbase to their benefit, so I don't have a ton of time for complaints they catch a boo or two in the low moments. The truth is as wildly neurotic as the fanbase can be, one good week, hell one good game, has them back in the fans' good graces. In G5 they puked on themselves and shit their pants at the same time and then did a faceplant into the vomit. They won G6 and that arena was as loud as it's ever been when G7 kicked off, and stayed behind them through the first half of a nonsense first period. The Leafs stopped skating before the fans stopped cheering. I don't like the jersey tossing, not because I find it offensive, but because it's performative losers hoping someone from the TV networks catch them, but the notion booing like that wouldn't happen in any other market with this team's track record is absurd.
