Matthews is not Captain Material. Crosby, McDavid yes. You can swe it how these two play. They pick up their team and carry them. Matthews never has and never will. A team is a reflection of their captain. Leafs need a heart and soul type of player to be their captian. they don't have one on their team, they need to get one.

At minimum I’d be letting Marner and JT walk. Realistically Mathew's isn’t going anywhere. Team is kind of stuck. Can’t really improve much. Best they can hope for is a retool and sign guys with the increased cap and Marner walking. Although that Marner money will be spent on Knies.

Marner + Tavares is 22 mil on July 1. That’s what the Leafs will get. Picks or prospects are not coming for those two. Their value is in the cap they clear. And cap is king in the new nhl.
