Where do the Leafs go if they blow it yet again?

Lundell and Barkov are true Selke-level players, Marner and Matthews are not.

Matthews IS playing injured, that must be true.

This seems pretty easy. Let Marner walk, coast for a year, offer McDavid the world.

If you know you have zero shot at mcDavid, then re-sign Marner, and ride this core to underachieving greatness and hope they figure it out.
You can offer McDavid the world for 7 seasons.
Oilers can offer Mcdavid the world for 8 seasons.

McDavid is gonna have to leave a LOT of money on the table to become a Leaf.

Florida is a hell of a team, but blowing a 2-0 lead and nearly getting shut out in b2b games is unacceptable even if the Leafs weren't expected to win.

JT - I think he takes a sweetheart deal to stay might even be as low as $5 or 6 mil.
MM - Doesn't seem like he wants to leave and has a kid now.. I think he takes a bit less and they sign him. I just don't see how you can let him walk for nothing. He can be traded at later point and they can at least get assets back.
MK - Takes the money saved from JT. He probably comes in around $7 - 8 mil

I think they run it back and overhaul the bottom 6 and tweak the D somehow.. The D is getting old.

Hopefully, they just try again with the same cast. The Flyers bring me no joy, so I need something to put a smile on my face.

I don’t think it is fair to constantly group them as the big four.

It’s the two main guys who are the culprits.

They're the four highest paid players and, with the exception of Rielly, the four longest-tenured members of the "core" of the roster.

Agreed that Matthews and Marner are the two biggest culprits though.

ya ok
dream getting mcdavid classic leaf thinking
how about draft guys
Obviously it is hoping he entertains coming there, but for cap reasons, you have to try right? Cant give Marner $12-14 and then magically hope you can find $15+.

Sure, can draft but not going to get very far there drafting 20+ for the past decade.

McDavid can get anything from anywhere. What's so special about Edmonton that's worth the extra year when he can just sign a short deal somewhere else and then extend when the cap is even greater? I've lived in Edmonton. There's nothing special to do there other than to go to a stupid mall that's aging.

I get why they are often grouped together because of their expected roles, but in terms of production and effectiveness they shouldn’t be in the same conversation.

All this talk about their forwards, and yeah, I get it to a certain point. But we never talk about their defense.

This f***ing SUUUCCKKKSSS!!!!

This organization has never made a real effort to upgrade their defense while this core group of forwards has been active. Patchwork at best.

yes tsn and SN said there D was soooooooo much better
look at what they traded to get some of these dudes

I dont think its blowing it losing to the best team in the east by a mile.

However last nights effort was concerning. They need to make some real big changes, however that doesnt mean they get rid of Matthews. He is clearly injured and a superstar two way center.

That being said they gotta move off of Reilly and Tavares in my opinion. Reilly bailed so hard going for a puck in the 2nd period in his corner when Tkachuk was coming. Simply cannot have that let alone from a leader and top 4 d man.

Two games ago there was a scrum towards the end and Ekblad and Tavares were tied up. Ekblad kept shoving him in the face. He did nothing, no push back. Was hard to watch.

trading 34 (which would never happen) could really load up this team maybe
Matthews stays, he has a wrist injury. Besides he's been doing other things well, it's Marner that needs to go.

I'm trying to keep some kind of hope, it's still a 3-2 series, but I've seen this movie 10 times, I don't think there's gonna be a different ending.

If they can't come back and win the series, re-tool around Matthews/Knies/Nylander. Try a sign and trade for Marner, we know he wants max cash so he might be willing to.
