Where did Yzerman go wrong with the rebuild?

  • HFBoards is doing server maintenance Thursday March 13th at 9 AM GMT 5 AM EDT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.

Does anyone of them need to be major point producers?

Looking at our current roster I'd say we're missing a 60-70 point forward (i.e. 1st line winger), ~2 forwards that can put up 40-60 points (i.e. improving our 2nd and 3rd lines) and a d-man that can produce ~30-40 points. (top pairing with Seider or 2nd pair with Ed).
If we had those things we're probably a shoe-in for the playoffs.

I get that another way to solve the team's issues would be to insert a 100 point forward and an 80 point d-man. But simply shoring up the depth of the team IS going to make this team quite a bit different.

But you have to factor in that Kane will be gone, and Larkin/DBC will be in their 30's and likely decline in production. That production has to be made up too.

This, so far, has been the first offseason I feel we have regressed instead of moving forward.
I disagree here. Yes in points this will likely be true, but we have gotten lots of young players good minutes. There is a tradeoff in the standings for that.

Most importantly Yzerman locked up Seider and Raymond long term. No matter how this season ends this is the best thing long term this team needed.

Going forward this is the best this team has been positioned for success yet. Now the cap is jumping.

This offseason will be crucial to taking that next step.

Oh yeah, all absurd... The losing though, ok.

Lol, who even cares anymore. I just laugh at you all now as much as you laugh at me.

It's right up there with the dipshits in gdts claiming the players don't care and/or aren't trying. It's clownshoes commentary...

I mean, I made that comment 2 days into free agency when only Edvinsson was mostly guaranteed a roster spot.

I am super happy Kasper, Elmer, and AlJo are getting significant playing time. I am glad we have a new coach and I am happy about the long term deals we got for Mo and Ray.

I still think we botched our defense. We did not improve our team enough to surround our players with the best possible chance to succeed. At the end of last season, we should have strengthened our team, instead we will probably be finishing around 15th overall. We went from Ghost, Walman, and Määttä to Holl, Gus, and Petry playing significant minutes this season.

I feel we could have improved the team by re-signing or retaining those three DMen and played the young guys while locking up our superstars.

They tried to get Trouba and he nixed the deal. Tried to save money with Gustafson. Bad idea there. I think they add a solid stay at home defenseman this offseason Maybe ASP crashes the party. Would love it.

That trouba thing is made up, they never got to the point where there was a deal that got nixed. Besides, we don’t want trouba at 8 mill anyways, that would be a disaster for us.
